A torii is traditional gate into a Shinto shrine, the portal from to the sacred from the profane. Passing through the Torii, however, does not change the view, as it is an open archway, making the difference bet ween the spiritual and the material worlds at best an illusion and, at worst, a lie.

鳥居は日本の神社の伝統的なアーチです。それは俗世間から聖なる場所へ入り口。しかし鳥居をくぐり抜けても景色はまったく変わりません。違いがあるとするなら、精神世界と物質世界の間の幻と言ったところ。しかしそれは嘘とも言えるかもしれません。
