英国大学院準備のいろは⑩～英国修士留学に必要なGPA～

今回の投稿では、英国大学院修士課程に合格するためにはGPAはどれくらい必要なのか、僕のケースを紹介します！
具体的には、僕の合格した以下のプログラムでどれくらいの成績が求められていたかを紹介します。
ただし、これはあくまで僕のケースです！出身大学や職務・研究実績などなどによって、合格に必要なGPAは異なると思います。
●London School of Economics and Political Science, MSc Sociology
●University of Oxford, MSc Sociology
●University of Manchester, MA Sociology
Entry Requirements
イギリスの大学院のEntry Requirementsを見ると、
Upper second class honours (2:1) degree or equivalentや、
A first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours
などと書いてあります。
First-class？
Upper Second??
そう言われても、具体的にGPAいくつあればいいんだよ！ってなりますよね^^; 僕もなりました(笑)
なので以下では、各大学院が規定するFirst-classやUpper-secondが日本の大学の成績で言うとどれくらいなのか、そして僕の応募した大学院では実際どのくらいのGPAが合格のために必要だったのかを紹介します＾＾
ちなみに僕が大学院に申請したときの学部のGPAは3.78/4.30で、4.0満点に換算すると3.52/4.0でした。まあまあ高い成績ではありますが、めちゃめちゃ高い！というほどではないと思います。
各大学院合格に必要なGPA
さっそく、僕の合格したプログラムが公式webサイト公表している最低限必要な成績と、僕が合格をもらった際に最終合格条件として提示されたGPAを紹介します。
LSE, MSc Sociology合格に必要な成績
このプログラムのEntry Requirmentsは、
Upper second class honours (2:1) degree or equivalent in a social science discipline.
このUpper second classはLSEのwebサイトによると、
To be considered for admission to a taught master's programme (upper second class equivalent), we would normally require a a bachelor's degree (gakushi, four-six years) from a highly regarded institution with an overall mark of 80 per cent, a GPA of 3.5/4, or A, with the majority of the marks attained at grade A. Applicants from other institutions can be considered with a mark of 89 per cent or an overall A.
と書いてあります。
僕の日本の大学がhighly regarded institutionに該当したので、最低限のGPAは3.5/4.0でした。また、合格をもらった後の最終合格の条件もGPAが3.5/4.0以上であることでした。
上の引用元にも書いてありますが、もしEntry Requirmentsとしてfirst classの成績を求められる場合、highly regarded institutionでのGPA3.8/4.0以上が必要なようです。
To be considered for admission to a taught master's programme (first-class equivalent), we would normally require a a bachelor's degree (gakushi, four-six years) from a highly regarded institution with an overall mark of 89 per cent, a GPA of 3.8/4, or, if no final grade is given, at least 65 per cent A grades.
University of Oxford, MSc Sociology合格に必要な成績
オックスフォード大学のMSc Sociologyに必要な最低限の成績は、
a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours in a social science subject.
です。
これは日本の大学の場合、
If your graduate course at Oxford requires a ‘strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours' in the UK system, you will usually need a bachelor’s degree with an overall grade of 80%, ‘B’ (high) or ‘Excellent’.
If your graduate course at Oxford requires a ‘first class undergraduate degree with honours' in the UK system, you will usually need a bachelor’s degree with an overall grade of 90%, ‘A’ (high) or ‘Outstanding’.
のようです。
ちなみに僕のGPA3.78/4.30は、87％くらいに該当しました。また、offer letterには最終合格の条件として、Achieve at least an overall GPA of 3.7/4.3と書いてありました。つまりオックスフォード大学のwebサイトには80%以上がstrong upper-second classと書いてあるけれど、（少なくとも僕の場合は）strong upper-second classの上の方の成績が最低限必要でした。
University of Manchester, MA Sociology合格に必要な成績
マンチェスター大学のMA SociologyのEntry Requirementには、
We require a UK bachelor's degree with a First or Upper Second classification or the overseas equivalent, in Sociology or a Social Science subject for direct entry to the MA programme.
との記載がありました。
ここで言うFirst classやUpper Second classificationが具体的にどのくらいの成績なのかは、残念ながら見つけることができませんでした。ただ、Offer letterの最終合格条件としては、GPA 3.2/4.3が必要だと書いてありました。
まとめると、僕が最終合格の条件として求められた成績は、
LSE GPA 3.5/4.0
Oxford GPA 3.7/4.3
Manchester 3.2/4.3
でした。
LSEはwebサイトのEntry Requirementに書いてある通り、Oxfordはwebサイトにあるより少し高め、Manchesterはwebサイトにあるより少し低めでした。
ただ、繰り返しになりますが、これは僕のケースであり合格に必要なGPAは応募年度や出身大学、職務経験などによって変わってくると思います。
また、成績はあくまで審査の一要素なので、成績要件を満たしていても不合格になることはあるでしょうし、ギリギリ満たしていなくても合格することもあるかもしれません！
成績以外にもSOPや英語テストのスコア、CVも同様に重要な審査材料です！
