歌詞にある「the wise men followed the star」の「The wise men」とは東方の三人の博士のことを表しています。博士たちはイエス・キリストがお生まれになったことをベツレヘムの星（クリスマスツリーのてっぺんにある星）を道標として、それぞれが黄金、没薬、乳香を捧げ物として携えお祝いに向かいました。旅は長く、キリストの降誕日である12月25日を超過した1月6日にようやくたどり着くことができました。これを記念して、1月6日を公現祭と呼び、キリスト教における厳密なクリスマスシーズンは12月25日〜1月6日と言われています。
