英語教育、ひいては教育とは何かについて書きました。英語も付けていますから、ぜひ読んでみてほしいです。私はあまり理解されない人間かもしれない。でも、生徒のために常に全力で向き合いたいと思っています。それは絶対に誰にも負けたくないです。

今日はちょっと長くなりますが、教育について、思うことを書かせていただきます。私はとある英会話学校の教師をしています。もう2年になります。そして、私が、代々木ゼミナールに通っていた時代のお話を少しさせてください。そこには、数学の荻野暢也先生という方と、英語の富田一彦先生という方がおられました。お2人とも、疑いようもなく一流の講師です。

この2人が大好きな理由を書いていきます。私は最近、教師の仕事をしていて思うのですが、「教育とは何か」ということを常に考えさせられます。正直な意見を申しますと、私は今のオンライン英会話スクールを、非常にシリアスに捉えておりまして、あくまで、教育機関として考えております。

それで、教育とは何か？その疑問に自分なりの答えを出しました。「教育とはその人の人生を変える可能性のあるもの」という答えを出しました。つまり、よりいい中学、高校、大学に入ること、そして、いい会社に入ること。そういったことを、実現させることのできる非常に尊いものであると思うのです。

では、もしその仮説が正しいとすれば、オンライン英会話教室のあるべき姿は何なのでしょうか？私が、教師のページに「やる気のない人は来ないでください」と申請しました。しかし、彼ら管理部門はそれを却下しました。

ということは、ここは教育機関ではないということなのでしょうか？私は、生徒を生徒としてしか思っていなくて、お客さんだとは思っていないのです。というか、思えないのです。「お金を払っているからいいんだ。何をしてもいいんだ。」そういう考えがあるとしたら、それは私は到底受け入れられるものではありません。

私の2年の教師経験で思うことは、私の原動力（motivation）は生徒に対する「愛情」でしかないということに気が付きました。毎日いらっしゃる方が多数おられます。1レッスン500円という、安くないお金を支払って予約してくださる方もいます。私の提供している「リプロダクションメソッド」で、「必ず英語はしゃべれるようになる」と生徒さんに謳っております。なぜそんな確信めいたことが言えるかと言えば、そのメソッドの本を読みこんだからです。

話は戻りますが、「やる気のない人は来ないでください」という私の考えは間違っていますでしょうか？私は授業の際は、常に真剣勝負です。僕は野球が大好きなので、先発投手で例えると、代打が来ようが、いつものレギュラー打者が来ようが、投手は1球1球が真剣勝負です。

今の英会話教室は、「今すぐレッスン」というのがあります。今私の評価は非常に高くなってしまっており、そうすると、ろくにプロフィールを読まずに入ってくる人が多くなります。そうすると、変な生徒、やる気がない人も多く来ます。

私はクラスでは、「リプロダクションレッスン」において、構文、文法、単語、特に文法についてはかなり、細かく説明します。これは先ほど、出てきた、富田一彦先生のご著書を読み、自分なりの英文解釈が完成していると思っているから、できることです。

富田一彦先生は、英語学習において、大事なことは、本質を見抜くことであると言います。ただ丸暗記するだけの「思想のない勉強」をするのはやめようと、本で書いていました。

東京大学で、1980年にこんな問題が出たことがあります。

What do I forget? I won't say everything.

2つ目の文章を訳せ、という問題です。

天下の東京大学が、こんな問題を出したのです。しかし、これは、「私はすべてを言うつもりはない」という部分否定の訳し方をすれば0点です。

How are you?に対し、I am fineと答えることは誰でも知っています。しかし、ここに英語の大切な原理原則があります。重複するSVは省略できるということです。つまり、答えはFineでもOKなのです。そして、疑問文に対する答えは「同じSVで答える」という原則があります。では先ほどの問題を見ましょう。

ここで気づかなければいけないことがあります。先ほどの疑問文と回答は同じSVを使っていないということです。このHow are you? Fineの原則を利用すれば、東京大学の問題は解けてしまいます。

What do I forget?のSVはもちろん、I forgetです。つまり、I won't say everythingは、このSVが省略されていると考えるべきなのです。ですから、I won't say [I forget] every thingとなるわけです。回答の中に「忘れる」という単語がないと0点です。東京大学は、受験生に問うているのは、本質を理解しているかということだと思います。

かつて東京大学の図書館で修士論文を書かせていたことがあるのですが、東京大学は素晴らしい大学だと思っています。こんな恵まれた環境はないと思いました。

話は、戻りますが、私は、荻野暢也先生の「やる気のない生徒は来てほしくない」ということを、本当に教育者の端くれとして、全く正論であると思っています。それを許さない教育機関は本当に教育機関でしょうか？

繰り返しになりますが「教育」とは、人の人生を変える可能性があるということです。非常に尊いものだと思っているのです。1か月7480円という安い値段だとしても、教育機関であることは間違いないと思っているのです。だから私は、その文言をどうしても教師紹介の画面に入れたい。

My beliefs about English language teaching. About my passion for education. What I think about online English conversation school.

Today I'm going to write about my beliefs about education, although it's a bit long. I am a teacher at an English conversation school. It's been two years now. Let me tell you a little about my time at Yoyogi Seminar. There was a mathematics teacher there, Mr Nobuya Ogino, and an English teacher, Mr Kazuhiko Tomita. Both of them are unquestionably top-notch teachers.

I will write about why I love both of them. My recent work as a teacher has made me constantly think about what education is all about. To be honest, I think online English schools are supposed to be serious ones
, and I used to think of them only as educational institutions.

So, what is education? I have come up with my own answer to that question. My answer is, "Education is something that has the potential to change a person's life." In other words, getting good education will get people to enter a better junior high school, high school, university or guraduate school, and getting into a good company. I think it is a very precious thing that can make those things happen.

So, if that hypothesis is correct, what should online English conversation classes be? I requested to admins for approving my profile. I wrote on my profile, "If you are not motivated, please don't enter my class". But they rejected it.

Does it mean that this is not an educational institution? I only think of my students as students and not as customers. I mean, I don't think of them as "I can do whatever I want just because I'm paying you.
" If the students have such kind of thinking, I would never accept it.

In my two years of teaching experience, I have realised that my motivation is to "love" my students. I have many students who come to my class every day, some student paying as little as 500 yen per lesson to book. With the "Reproduction Method" that I offer, I tell my students that "You can speak English soon". The reason why I can say this with such conviction is because I have read the book in the method. I mean, Reproduction.

Going back to the subject, am I wrong in my belief that "if you are not motivated, please don't come?" I am always serious when I teach. I love baseball, so to use an analogy with a starting pitcher, whether a substitute pitcher comes in or the usual regular batter comes in, every pitch is a serious one for the pitcher.

Now English conversation classes are called "sudden lesson". Now ratings has become very high, and then I get a lot of people who come in without even reading my profile. Then there are a lot of strange and unmotivated students coming in.

In my classes, in the "reproduction lesson", I go into a lot of detail about syntax, grammar and vocabulary, especially grammar. I can do this because I have read Kazuhiko Tomita's book, which I mentioned earlier, and consider my own interpretation of English grammar to be complete.

Kazuhiko Tomita says that the important thing in learning English is to see the essence of the language. He wrote in his book that everyone should stop doing "thoughtless study", which is just memorising.

At the University of Tokyo, in 1980, there was a question like this in admission exam.

"What do I forget? I won't say everything."

The question is to translate the second sentence into Japanese.

The University of Tokyo, which is a world-known university, gave this question. However, this is a zero point if you translate the partial negative as "I am not going to say everything".

Everyone knows how to answer the question "How are you?" and most people answer it as commonly like "I am fine". But there are an important principles of English. It means that duplicating SVs can be omitted. In other words, the answer can be "Fine". And there's also another principle that the answer to a question should be answered with the same SV. Now let's look at the previous question.

Now let's look at the previous question. we have to notice something. It means that the question and the answer to the previous question do not use the same SV. By using the phrase "How are you?" and answering it as "Fine" is already correct, you can answer the University of Tokyo question correctly.

The SV of "What do I forget?" is "I forget". In other words, "I won't say everything" should be thought of as omitting this SV. So it becomes "I won't say [I forget] every thing". If there is no word "forget" in the answer, then zero point are given. I think what the University of Tokyo is asking students is whether they understand the essence of the question.

I used to have my master's thesis written in the library of the University of Tokyo, and I think the University of Tokyo is a wonderful university. I thought it was such a blessed environment.

Going back to the subject, as an educator, I truly believe that Nobuya Ogino's statement saying "I don't want students who are not motivated to come here" is a perfect valid argument. His statement is quite fair indeed. As one of teachers, I think so. Is an educational institution that does not allow this really an educational institution?

Again,“education”means the possibility of changing people's lives. I believe it is something very precious, and I believe that even if it costs as little as 7480 yen a month, it is still an educational institution. So I really want to put that statement on the teacher's profile.
