Humans of HLAB vol.12 Mattori Birnbaum

What makes you ‘who you are’ right now?
Humans of HLAB is a platform where it focuses on ‘people’ within the HLAB community to share their unique stories and perspectives - especially on what makes them who they are right now. The stories posted are based on the project, ‘Humans of New York’, which Brandon Stanton shares quotes and short stories from his interviewees in their tone of speaking, along with their portraits.

“Why do I try? Well no matter what, I will have to learn or do something new - so I just give things a chance.”

I think challenges are fun - and they are the most interesting parts of my life, I think. So like one time I tried to create a bot for a reddit. Back then, I didn’t even have much of programming knowledge, but I just decided to learn a new programming language just because it seemed easier - well, I knew there’s gonna be a bunch of programming process I have to go through, but I just wanted to know how they work and give it a try.

And I mean, I don’t wanna over challenge myself obviously, so I definitely try to weigh all the options. I guess a fair amount of my decision making comes down to thinking about options and almost like going with a gut feeling. It being a challenge is part of why I want to work in Japan. There are some career paths that will give me a good status and other stuff, but I wasn’t too concerned with those. Rather, I was more concerned with having a chance to try something fairly unique.

Of course as I go along, I’m definitely gonna be careful just to make sure that everything turns out okay. I’m not anxious, but I’m just conscious that I have to be careful of those kinds of things. Definitely there will be some bumps along the way, but I’m sure it’s gonna be at the very least an interesting experience.
