大手ゲームメーカーとして世界のゲームファン魅了する任天堂(Nintendo)。その聖地といえる京都市下京区にある旧本社ビルがホテルに生まれ変わろうとしている。

Nintendo attracts game fans around the world as a major game maker. The former head office building in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, which can be said to be the sacred place, is about to be reborn as a hotel.

2年前に勤務(アルバイト)していた職場近くに気になる建物があった。鴨川にほど近い七条通と五条通の間の、正面橋を西に入った住宅の路地裏の一角に、堂々たる近代的建造物がそびえ建ち、目を惹く存在だった。
当時、玄関先まで行ってみるとこんな掲出看板がかかっていた。"トランプ・たるか"と妙な文字の看板が掲出されていた。内部は人の気配はなく、長い間、空き家状態のビルだ。看板の下に「堂天任内山」と古さを感じさせる右からの読む漢字の看板。

There was an interesting building near my workplace where I was working (part-time job) two years ago. A majestic modern building stood in the back alley of a house on the west side of the Shomen bridge between hichijo-dori and gojo-dori, which is close to the Kamo River. At that time, when I went to the front door, there was a sign like this. A signboard with strange characters such as "Trump / Karuta" was posted. There is no sign of people inside, and it has been a vacant building for a long time. Below the signboard is a kanji signboard that you can read from the right, which makes you feel old as "Yamauchi-Nintendo".

聞いてみると、ここが、世界の「Nintendo」の発祥地であり、その大正ロマンを色濃く残すビルヂィングなのである。創業当時は、写真にあるように “かるた” をメインに作っていた会社である。
創業者の山内房治郎氏が、明治22年にスタートし日本一のカード製造会社となった。2代目社長が「合名会社山内任天堂」と「株式会社丸福」を設立し、現在の任天堂へとつながっていった。その原点の地がここである。

When asked, this is the birthplace of "Nintendo" in the world, and the building that retains its Taisho romance. At the time of its founding, it was a company that mainly made "karuta" as shown in the photo. The founder, Fusajiro Yamauchi, started in 1887 and became the number one card manufacturer in Japan. 任天堂（京都市南区）の創業の地として残る旧本社ビルが、この夏にホテルに生まれ変わる。昭和初期に建てられたアール・デコ風の建物の雰囲気をできるだけ残しながら増改築(設計監修は安藤忠雄建築研究所/施工は大林組)し、レストランやバーを備えた約２０室のホテルに改装され、歴史を語れる新しい空間に生まれ変わる。

The former head office building, which remains as the founding place of Nintendo (Minami-ku, Kyoto), will be reborn as a hotel this summer. It was renovated (designed and supervised by Tadao Ando Architectural Institute / constructed by Obayashi Corporation) while retaining the atmosphere of the Art Deco-style building built in the early Showa period, and renovated into a hotel with about 20 rooms equipped with a restaurant and bar.Reborn as a new space where you can talk about history.

日本は数年前からホテルラッシュで沸いたが、新型コロナウィルス感染で国内外からの観光客はゼロに近い状態の中どう立ち向かうのかが見ものである。任天堂が直接運営に携わるわけではないが、世界の任天堂の神通力が道を開いていくような気もするが・・。楽しみである。

It has been boiled in the hotel rush for several years in Japan, but it is a sight to see how tourists from home and abroad will face the situation near zero due to the new coronavirus infection. Nintendo is not directly involved in the operation, but I feel that the magical power of Nintendo in the world will open the way. I'm looking forward to it.
