　所長の秘書に案内された脳機能計測技術研究グループのオフィスは、日本のドラマでよくみる、部屋の中央に向かい合わせにデスクを並べ島を作ったような構造をしていた。
　10人分のデスクのうち、人がいるのはひとつだけだった。そこにいた三十前後に見える男性が慧子と秘書に近づいてきた。
「宝生リーダーはどちらですか？」
秘書が尋ねると、若い男性が
「さっき、所長室に行くって連絡があったけど」
と、ぶっきらぼうに答えた。
   Keiko was shown to by the secretary the office of the laboratory of the Brain Function Measurement Technology Research Group. The office had a structure similar to what Keiko often saw in Japanese dramas: desks lined up facing each other in the center of the room, creating an island. Of the 10 desks, only one was occupied. A man who looked to be around 30 approached Keiko and the secretary.
“Where is the Group Leader, Hosho?”
The secretary asked.
"I just received a message saying that she was going to the director's office."
The young man answered bluntly.

 「変ですね。それなら、途中ですれ違うはずなのに」
秘書が怪訝そうな顔をする。
「実験棟にいたから、中庭を回って行ったんでしょ。その方が近いから」
そう答えて、男性が慧子を頭の先からつま先までじろじろ見回した。
「この人が、例の？」
「ケイコ・レノックス博士です」
と秘書が慧子を紹介した。
"That's strange. If that's the case, we should have passed each other on the way."
The secretary looked puzzled.
"The leader was in the experiment building. She probably went around the courtyard. It's closer that way."
The man answered and then looked at Keiko from head to toe.
“So, this is the person, isn't she?”
"Yes. This is Dr. Keiko Lennox."
The secretary introduced Keiko to the young man.

　「レノックスです。よろしくお願いします」
と慧子が差し出した手を握り返しながら、男性が
「ハグレ者の吹き溜まりにようこそ」
と言って、にたりと笑った。陰のある歪んだ笑顔だと慧子は感じた。
「僕は研究員の芦川です。研究員といっても、非常勤の雑用係ですけど」
男性の笑顔がさらに歪んで見えた。
   "I'm Lennox Keiko. Nice to meet you."
Keiko held out her hand. Holding Keiko's hand, the young man said
‶Welcome to the hang-out for deported researchers.”
And then he smiled. Keiko felt that the man's smile was dark and distorted.
"I'm Ashikawa, officially a researcher. But in reality, I'm just a part-time miscellaneous staff."
His smile looked more crooked.

「僕もこれから実験棟に行くんで。僕の席で待ってればいいでしょう。宝生リーダーの隣の席だから」
芦川と名乗った研究員は、そう言って自分の席を指さすと、部屋から出て行った。
「仕方ないですね。リーダーが戻るまでここでお待ちください」
と秘書が言い、慧子は「ええ」と答えた。他に反応のしようがないだろう。
   "I'm going to the experiment building now. You can wait in my seat. It’s next to that of Leader Hosho."
The researcher, who introduced himself as Ashikawa, pointed to his seat and left the room.
"It can't be helped. Please wait here until the leader returns."
said the secretary, and Keiko replied, "Yes." She thought here was no other way to react.

　慧子が芦川の席に腰を下ろすと、秘書がオフィスの隅のコーヒーメーカーから紙コップにコーヒーを注いでもってきた。
「申し訳ありませんが、私は戻らないと」
と、実は大して申し訳ないと思っていなさそうな口調で秘書が言った。慧子は「子どもじゃないから一人で大丈夫です」と言いたかったが、一々角を立てる必要もないので、「どうぞ」とだけ答えた。
　秘書が出て行ったあと、慧子はコーヒーをすすりながら、「ハグレ者の吹き溜まり」とは、今の自分に実に相応しい職場だと、一人で納得するのだった。
   As Keiko sat down in Ashikawa's seat, her secretary poured coffee into a paper cup from the coffee maker in the corner of the office.
"I'm sorry, but I have to go back."
said the secretary, sounding like actually she didn't feel sorry. Keiko wanted to say, ``I'm not a child, so I'm fine on my own,'' but Keiko notided it would be of no use to offend the secretary and just replied, ``I’m fine.''
After the secretary left, while sipping her coffee, Keiko thought that `` a hang‐out for deported researchers” is a workplace as if tailor-made for her current situation.
