『 Keith Jarrett / The Cure 』

Keith Jarrettの"standards"の名義でリリースされたアルバムは20作余りあるが、本作『The Cure』は今ひとつ見逃される傾向にある作品である。軽い感じのイラストが原因なのか、或いは"Live at Town Hall New York"の文字が小さ過ぎるのが原因なのであろうか。77分に及ぶ演奏は内容が濃く改めて聴き直す価値が大いにあるだろう。曲はKeith自身のオリジナルが1曲と残り7曲はスタンダードと有名ジャズ曲から成り立っている。①のMonk作曲の"Bemsha Swing"から③Gillespie作曲の"Woody'n You"まで快調に飛ばし④"Blame It On My Youth"でスローなバラードとなる。このスタンダード曲の持つ内省的な雰囲気を Keithのピアノが思い出を語りかけるようにデリケートに弾いていく。観客の心に響いたことは拍手の大きさで分かるだろう。私好みの綺麗なメロディを持つ曲⑤"Golden Earrings"をスインギーに処理した後の⑥"Body and Soul"が取り分け素晴らしい。意表をついた内省的かつ瞑想的なピアノソロから始まり中盤でテーマメロディが示されミディアムテンポに転じて行く。Garyのベースソロも味わい深い長尺の13分間である。⑦の自作タイトル曲『The Cure』はシンプルだがファンキーなエイトビート、Garyのベースの反復するリズムとJackの終盤に聴かせるドラムソロはツボを心得ていてとてもナイスだ。コンサートを締めくくるのはエリントン曲『Things Ain't What They Used To Be』である。ここでのJackのドラミングは超一流、本当に素晴らしい。キースのピアノがブルースの真髄を聴かせ始め彼の唸り声もいい感じに響く。テーマを反復した後演奏が終わり観客の大拍手が演奏の反響の程を物語っている。こうして久しぶりにこのライブに触れてやはり"Standards"の演奏は奥が深いなと改めて思い知った次第である。1991年録音作品。☆☆☆☆☆

Keith Jarrett has released more than 20 albums under the name "standards," but "The Cure" tends to be overlooked, perhaps because of the light-hearted illustrations, or perhaps because the text "Live at Town Hall New York" is too small.
The 77-minute performance is rich in content and well worth a second listen. The remaining seven songs are standards and well-known jazz tunes, including one original by Keith himself. The album starts with Monk's "Bemsha Swing" (1), then moves on to "Woody'n You" (3) by Gillespie, and ends with "Blame It On My Youth" (4), a slow ballad. Keith's piano delicately played the introspective atmosphere of this standard song as if he was recounting his memories. The applause was loud enough to show that the song had touched the hearts of the audience. After the swingy treatment of "Golden Earrings" (5), a song with a beautiful melody that I like, "Body and Soul" (6) is especially wonderful. Gary's bass solo is also very tasteful in this long 13 minutes. The Cure", the title track of the album, is a simple but funky eight-beat piece, and Gary's repetitive bass rhythm and Jack's drum solo at the end of the song are very nice and on point. The concert closed with Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". Jack's drumming here was top-notch and truly wonderful. Keith's piano started to sound like the quintessential blues, and his growl was a nice touch. After repeating the theme, the performance ended, and the audience's loud applause told how well the performance had been received. Having experienced this live performance for the first time in a long time, I was reminded once again of the profound depth of the performance of "Standards." Recorded in 1991. ☆☆☆☆☆
