かねてから、ボブ・ディランの 'Idiot Wind'「愚かな風」の9連の歌詞が気になっていました。とんでもなく変わった韻が使われているからです。その韻は詩人のギンズバーグが指摘するまで誰も気づかなかったくらい、想定外のものでした。

2018年11月に、その歌が含まれるアルバム 'Blood on the Tracks'「血の轍」の未発表テイクなどを収めたブートレッグ・シリーズ第14集 'More Blood, More Tracks' が発売され、歌詞の変遷がある程度分るのではないかと思って、調べてみました。その結果を簡潔に紹介します。

■ More Blood, More Tracks

未発表テイクが収められた 'More Blood, More Tracks' (Deluxe Edition) には、'Idiot Wnd' のテイクは全部で次の9つが収められている。問題の9連に相当する箇所が含まれていないテイクのトラック番号は丸括弧で囲った。

■ スタジオ録音

ヘイリン(Clinton Heylin)によると、'Idiot Wind' のスタジオ録音は次のものが知られている。1974年の9月のニューヨーク録音と同年12月のミネソタ(ミネアポリス)録音とである。公式盤に採用されたのは後者のミネソタ録音。

ヘイリンのいうテーク5は'More Blood, More Tracks'では 'Take 4, Remake with Organ Overdub' に当たる。

■ 9連の歌詞

'More Blood, More Tracks' (Deluxe Edition) の未発表テイク8つはすべて同じ歌詞だった。最初の2行の韻 jaw / Gras は聞取りやすい。

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your jaw
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Mardi Gras
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot babe,
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

これらは、すべて1974年9月のニューヨークでの録音である。

これが、同年12月のミネソタ録音の公式盤だと次のように変わる。

Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You’re an idiot, babe
It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe

この最初の2行の skull / Capitol こそ、ギンスバーグが指摘するまで誰も気づかなかった韻だ。

しかし、これは9月のニューヨーク録音では歌われていない。

とすると、9月から12月までの3ヶ月間のどこかで変更されたと考えられる。その変更の過程は、少なくとも知られている限りの、我々が耳にすることができる限りの正規盤(公式盤とブートレグ・シリーズ)では、録音としては確かめられない。
