クリスマス。由来や意味合いはさておき、信者であろうがなかろうが、人が人として人に優しくなれる日だと思いたい。少なくともそういう気持ちを持てる時期であってほしい。

イヴな今夜はFrank Sinatraです。
クリスマス・ソングといえば超有名曲”White Christmas”がありますが、Frankはそれと同等の曲をさらに欲しがりました。そのオーダーが入ったSammy CahnとJule Styneは相当困ったそうです。
「真夏のLAで過ごしていた時、電話が鳴って「フランクがクリスマス・ソングをご所望だ」って。あの”White Christmas”の後に何が書けるっていうんだい？バカバカしい…」とSammyは思ったそうですが、とにかくボスの命令なので制作を開始…だってクリスマスなんだから。

アイデアは「ワルツ調のクリスマス・ソングってないんじゃない？」というもの。こうして生まれた”The Christmas Waltz”は1954年、シングル”White Christmas”のB面としてリリースされ、隠れた名曲として様々なシンガーがカヴァーしています。

ちなみに…私が敬愛してやまないGeorge Michaelのクリスマス・ソング”December Song”のイントロで流れる讃美歌の元ネタはこの曲だったということに、つい最近気づきました。
（悲しくもとても温かい歌です）
