ミューズは新作からのセカンド・シングルとなる"Madness"

を公開している。

10月3日に新作『ザ・セカンド・ロウ～熱力学第二法則』をリリースするミューズだが、オリンピック公式曲ともなった"サヴァイヴァル"

に続くシングルとなり8月20日にリリースした。なお、バンドはダブステップも大胆に導入した"Unsustainable"

のビデオも先に公開している。

アルバムについてドラムのドミニク・ハワードはバンドにとって「未来への扉を開く」作品となったと次のように『NME』に語っている。

「アルバムを出す時には必ずリリースされてからどうなるのかと考えると、気分が高揚して、神経質になって、さらに不安にもなるものなんだけど、今回の作品ではぼくたちはバンドにとっての新しいアイディアをいくつか発見することにも成功してるんだ。どのアルバムもぼくには将来への扉を開けてきたものだと思うけど、今度のアルバムはことさらにそういう感触を得たんだよ」
Drummer Dominic Howard told NME that the album was an "open door to the future" for the band.

"Whenever we release an album, it's always exciting, nerve-wracking, and even anxiety-inducing to think about what's going to happen after it's released, but with this record we've come up with a number of new ideas for the band. I think every album has opened a door to the future for me, but this one feels even more like that.''
