もとは同時期にまとめて読んだものの自分用読書メモ。本館限定記事としていましたが、noteのほうがリンクの取り回しが良いので移動しました。本館側は削除済です。

レビューとしては公開・非公開考えず書いたものなので雑です。読み返すのに時間がかかるため、当時の文章でそのまま載せます。書誌情報のためアマゾンリンクも載せていますが、すべてパブリックドメインなので無料ダウンロード可能です。Internet ArchiveまたはGoogle Booksのリンクからどうぞ。

著作権切れにネットPD化が進み比較的入手しやすくなった反面、あまりに大著すぎたり百科辞典だったりするものを、バラして別タイトルをつけて再販したものが多数。あまりほめられないやり口のネット専門オンデマンド系出版社だけでなく、学術系出版社でも再販や新版のかたちでおこなっていることも有り。引用の際は、初版年とそのタイトルの確認が必須。

読書メモ

読んだのは、全5巻のうち画像に挙げた部分、第3巻のみ。その中でもさらに27章から34章の、17世紀前半部分まで。

「情報量はすごい。が、事実関係の羅列にとどまっている」との批評がありましたが、むしろそういった箇所こそが評価できる良書。確かに、出来事が淡々と続いていくだけの書き方かもしれないけれど、とにかく非常にバランスは良い。ドイツだけまずはまとめて書く、次はフランスだけ、というのではなく、できる限り各国の動きを時代に平行に書こうとしていて、「横」のつながりがわかりやすい。ロレーヌ、聖界選帝侯領、ヴェネツィア、ポルトガルの動向も、通常の概説よりも詳細で、しかもそれぞれ良いタイミングで出てきます。各国の「縦」の動きをある程度わかっていないと、細切れに感じるかもしれませんが。

それでも、「人」に対する好き嫌いは随所に感じられます。とくに、対マウリッツと対フレデリク＝ヘンドリクではだいぶ書き口が違うような…？　また、広く浅くではなく、広く若干深くなので、弱い部分が逆に目立つ。著者の興味の薄い（と思われる）人物に対して、言いがかりに近いと言ってしまっても良いような事実誤認がいくつか見られました。

読書メモ

最新の版は「Short Oxford History of Europe」シリーズの “The Seventeenth Century: Europe 1598-1715” 。あまりにも版によって書名がばらけていることから、初版はもともとエッセイで、まとまって本にしていなかった可能性もあり。

目次から見ても納得のフランス推し。むしろほとんどフランス史。作者が宗教史の本も書いている関係から、第一章から宗教的動機が強い。教皇やイエズス会についてもからめてあるのはわかりやすい。確かにDyerに比べると、フランスの部分は事実関係はあらかじめわかっているものという前提での議論が多い。

逆に三十年戦争はプレーンな史実に留まっていて、通り一遍な印象。このように章によっての違いが顕著なのが、もともと一冊の本ではないんじゃないかと考えた理由です。それでも、1620年代のイングランドの動向の書き方は良かった。読んだ中ではいちばん因果関係がすっきりわかった気がする。

読書メモ

はしがきに「ブライテンフェルトやリュッツェンは母国語（英語）で読めるものいくらでもあるけど、それ以降のものってないよね？」とあり、英語話者のために書かれた三十年戦争後半以降の戦史。コンセプトははっきりしていて、最初もいきなりスウェーデン上陸の1630年代から始まっています。読んだのは7章の三十年戦争の終わりのところまで。

コンセプトは良いけれど、逆にいうとコンセプトだけかも。3冊のうちではいちばん偏りを感じた。あからさまなベルンハルト、テュレンヌ推しで、ドイツ側＝悪といってもいいくらいのイメージ。作者自身「人」に焦点を当てるといっているけれど、焦点どころかえこひいきレベルです。Dyer もそうだったので、時代のトレンドもあるのかも。
