ザピオンのエロタ像

アテネの街の中心にあるザピオンは緑が多く、散歩や、ベンチに腰掛けておしゃべ

りや読書などに最適な場所です。ザピオンに私のお気に入りのギリシャ神話のエロ

タ(キューピッド)の彫刻があります。エロタは美の神様アフロディティの息子で

す。エロタという言葉は愛や恋を意味しますが、キューピッドといったほうが馴染

みがあるかもしれません。ギリシャ神話を受け継いだローマでの名称です。翼の生

えた小さな少年、あるいは幼児として描かれます。今日は素敵なエロタとプシヒの

お話を紹介します。

アフロディティに嫉妬された美女プシヒ

美の神様アフロディティは、若く美しいプシヒに嫉妬していました。プシヒの美貌

に大勢の男性が虜となりプロポーズをするために彼女の後を追いかけ回していまし

た。そこでアフロディティは息子エロタに命令し、プシヒがこの世で一番醜い男と

結婚するように企てます。エロタは愛の矢を持っています。エロタの矢には金の矢

と、鉛の矢があり、金の矢で射られた者はどうすることもできない愛の虜となりま

す。鉛の矢で射られたものは嫌悪の情に支配されます。矢をプシヒに天界から射よ

うと構えた時に、間違ってその矢じりで自分の指を傷つけてしまします。そのこと

により、逆にエロタがプシヒに対して抗うことができない愛情を抱くことになりま

す。

エロタの愛とプシヒの過ち

アフロディテの怒りを恐れて、こっそりと西の風ゼフィラに頼みプシヒを宮殿に招

きます。宮殿でプシヒは目に見えない何者かによって、愛情に満たされた、何の不

自由もない贅沢な生活を送ることになりました。エロタはプシヒに姿を見られない

ように日が暮れてから毎晩プシヒを訪れます。そしてプシヒにも絶対に光のあると

ころで自分の姿を見てはいけないと約束させます。

プシヒには姉がおり、エロタは姉を宮殿に招きプシヒと再会させました。幸せいっ

ぱいで贅沢なプシヒの生活をみて驚くばかりでした。姉は嫉妬から、正体の見えな

い男性は怪物ではないかと疑います。プシヒに寝室に行き、光をかざして眠ってい

る男性の正体を見るように言いました。姉の言うことに逆らえず、そっとエロタの

寝ている寝室に行きます。そこで目にしたのは驚くほど美しい若い男性の姿でし

た。不運にもちょうどプシヒが寝室を去ろうとした際、プシヒが持っていたランプ

から一滴の油がエロタの背中へポツンと落ちました。エロタは目を覚まし、約束を

破ったプシヒにがっかりし、遠くへ飛び去って行きました。

プシヒの難業と二人の行く末

絶望の淵にたたされたプシヒは、必死でエロタを探しますが見つかりません。どう

することもできず、アフロディテに助けを求めます。まだ嫉妬心を抱いていたアフ

ロディティは非常に困難な試練を言い渡します。いろんな人に助けられ、それぞれ

の難題を果たしていきます。最後の試練は冥界へ行ってペルセフォニから「美」の

入った小さな箱を持ち帰るというものでした。なんとか箱を手に入れ帰る途中、自

分のやつれた姿を悲しみ、出来心からその「美」の箱を開けてしまいます。その瞬

間、気を失い深い眠りについてしまいます。そこへ突然エロタがやってきます。ま

だプシヒのことを愛していたので、最高神ゼウスに訴え、プシヒを生き返らせ、エ

ロタと同じ不死身としました。ゼウスの仲裁により母アフロディティからも許さ

れ、二人は結婚しました。

最後に

再び命と愛を手に入れたプシヒはギリシャ語で魂という意味です。人が亡くなる前

の最後の一息、プシューという音からこの言葉は作られました。最後の息が魂とな

り魂が冥界へ旅立つのです。（日本ではプシヒではなく、プシュケと訳されていま

す。）

ギリシャ神話ではエロタはほとんど幼児として登場するのですが、この青年として

描かれたエロタとプシヒのお話は私のお気に入りです。恋に落ち、愛の喜びを感じ

るプシヒがエロタの存在を疑い約束を破ります。過ちに気づき苦難の果てに再び愛

を取り戻すというストーリーは素敵です。（Written by Yuki)

Greek mythology, Eros (Cupid) and Psyche

Zappeion, which is in the heart of Athens, is a great place to take a walk. There is one beautiful sculpture of Eros there and it is one of my favourites. Eros is the son of Aphrodite, the god of beauty and Eros is the god of love in Greek mythology. Eros means love in Greek. Eros is called Cupid in Roman mythology and Cupid sounds more familiar. Eros is depicted as a little boy with wings. I would like to introduce a wonderful story about Eros and Psyche. 

A beautiful woman Psyche who was jealous of Aphrodite
Aphrodite, the god of beauty, was jealous of the young, beautiful Psyche. A lot of men attracted by her beauty were chasing after her to ask her to marry. So Aphrodite orders her son Eros to make Psyche marry the ugliest man in the world. Eros has two arrows, gold and lead ones. The person who let the gold arrow at becomes a captive of love. The person who let the lead arrows become a captive of disgust. When he was ready to shoot her with the gold arrow, by mistake he hurt his own finger with the arrowhead. Then Eros becomes having irresistible affection toward Psyche.
Eros's love and Psyche's mistake
Fearing Aphrodite's anger, he asks Zephyra, the West Wind, to invite Psihi to his palace. In the palace, Psihi lives a luxurious life without any inconvenience by an invisible man. Eros visits Psyche every night after the sun goes down so that he cannot be seen by Psyche. He lets her promise not to see him under the light and she agrees. Psihi has a sister and she hasn’t seen her for a long time so Eros invites her sister to the palace to reunite. Her sister was astounded to see the happy and luxurious life of Pshihi. Her sister is jealous of her and she tells Psihi that the unidentified man may be a monster. She forced Psyche to go to his bedroom to see how he is and she did. However, what she saw there was a beautiful young man. Unfortunately, while Psyche was leaving from his bedroom, a drop of oil from the lamp fell on his back. Eros suddenly got up and what he saw was Psyche. He was very disappointed and he disappeared.
Psyche's effort and their fate
In despair, Psyche searches for Eros, but cannot find him. Finally Psyche asks Aphrodite to help. Aphrodite was still jealous of her so she gave the hardest missions to her. However she overcame the difficulties with help from others. The last ordeal was to go to the underworld and bring a small box of "beauty" which belongs to Persephone. She managed it and on the way back she looked at herself and realised that she became uglier from all these ordeals that she had gone through. She wanted her beauty back. She knew that she was not allowed to open the beauty box but she couldn’t help it. Once opening it, she fainted and passed away. Eros came over there suddenly and realised that he still loved her. He asked the God Zeus to bring her back to life and Zeus did it and made her immortal. By Zeus’s arbitration Aphrodite accepted them and the two married at the end.
At the end
Psihi means soul in Greek. The word comes from the sound of the last breath before death. In Greek mythology, Eros appears mostly as a toddler, but this story of Eros as a young man. This is my favourite story. She falls in love and feels the joy of the love. However she doubts him and breaks her promise. But at the end she got her love back again after many hardships that she overcame. This story is beautiful, isn’t it? (Written by Yuki)
