An essay on fair argument

　What is correct is correct. There is no denying this fact. But to always say something true is true is not necessarily right. 

　You are a teacher and one of your students asks,
"I am poor at mathematics. It is all Greek to me. I can't for the life of me understand it. What should I do?" 
　You say, "If you study mathematics much harder, you will gradually come to understand it. Read your textbook repeatedly." 

　Your answer is correct. There is no denying your statement. But probably your student knows that he will be able to understand mathematics if he studies much harder before you say so. 

　In a case like this, what you have to do is not to tell him what is correct.
    Instead, all you have to do is just to listen to him and to motivate him to study mathematics.

正論について

　正しいことは正しい。これは否定できないことだ。けれども、いつも本当のことを本当だと言うことは必ずしも正しいとは限らない。

　あなたは教師で、あなたの生徒の１人が尋ねる。

「僕は数学が苦手です。さっぱり理解できません。どうしても数学が理解出来ないんです。どうしたらよいでしょう？」

　あなたは言う。
「もっと一生懸命に数学を勉強すれば、だんだん分かるようになるよ。繰り返し教科書を読みなさい」

　あなたの答えは正しい。あなたの言ったことは否定しようもない。けれども、おそらく、あなたが言う前から、もっと一生懸命勉強すれば数学が理解出来るようになることをその生徒は知っている。

　このような場合、あなたがすべきことは生徒に正しいことを伝えることではない。その代わり、あなたがすべきことは、ただ生徒の言うことに耳を傾けて、数学の勉強をするように励ましてあげることだ。
