などの中国共産党の意向に沿ったような寄稿が並ぶ。

こんな状況で、“Hong Kong protests”コラムよりも遥かに前の場所に、SCMPからのAnnouncementsとして“Introducing the South China Morning Post’s new digital subscription plans”というコラムが7月27日にTammy Tam (Editor-in-Chief = 編集長か？)署名で発信されていた。

要するに、これからはWEBサイトの閲覧を有料とする、ということである。

そもそも、民間新聞社であれば世界中どこでも同じように、閲覧は有料であった。ところが、2015年に馬雲のAlibabaに買収されてからは、全ての記事が無料で閲覧可能となっていたのである。

それを有料にするというのである。その理由を・・・

・・・と説明しているのであるが、元々有料であったものを無料にした経緯を無視している。

そして8月からは・・・

・・・要は、無料で閲覧できる記事数には制限がある、ということで、これはAlibabaによる買収以前に戻るだけのことである。

生き死にに関わる内容には課金しない、ということか。言い訳がましい。

25年前の香港勤務時の経験に基づけば、中文を一切解しないビジネスパーソンは購読せざるを得ないという必然性があった。

しかし、国家安全法成立以降、香港を回避する動きが加速する可能性がある。

記事の内容も、上述の通り既に《China Daily》や《大公報》かの如きだ。

有料購読者数がどれだけになるか見物である。
