What is the definition of fast?~(Japanese and English)

What does it mean to be “fast”?

It is common to prioritize speed during work. In the field of business nowadays, the mentality that being fast is one of the keys to success is drilled into people. I am quite the heavy user of this word — fast.

There was a time when this question arose in my mind: what does “fast” really even mean?

To complete all of your tasks in the blink of an eye.
To
reply to all the messages in your inbox as soon as possible.
To make a split-second decision in a moments notice.

There are many things you can do that could be considered working fast, but if you were to take into consideration the 3 sentences above, you might have to add the preamble that these tasks are fast specifically when looked at through a short term perspective.

Of course it is important to get tasks done as soon as possible, as humans are creatures of procrastination by nature. However, speed can be split into the two categories of long term and short term speed. If you look at things in this manner, you might find that focusing on short term speed can actually have adverse effects on your long term progress.

In what direction is your company, project, or current activity headed? What do you need to accomplish in the short term, as it pertains to your long term goals?

These questions fall neatly into the conversation about prioritization. Anyone can get something accomplished when it is an emergency, because it’s an emergency, but what we tend to overlook is the things that are not urgent enough to be considered emergencies, but still important — or even crucial, to our end goals.

To get back on the topic of short and long term speed, lets first take a closer look at the short term. It is easier to relate to, as the necessity of getting urgent tasks done as soon as possible is a universal idea.

In a single day, there are countless such tasks that fall under this category, if you let them. It is sad, but the reality is that most people have to spend a majority of each day either getting these tasks out of the way, or stressing about doing so. It is a hectic lifestyle.
Let’s say that two years pass in this manner. One might find that nothing has been produced to show for all the previous work, despite feeling that they were busy the whole time. This is one of the potential outcomes of focusing on speed in the short-term.

To avoid this pitfall, it is important to be conscious of speed in the long term sense. In other words, you have to recognize and identify the differences between what is urgent and what is important. The actions it takes to achieve something that is important in the long term are usually not so urgent, but still need to be done with consistency.
It is necessary to identify what is important in the long term, and disregard it’s lack of urgency in the short term. Likewise, one must recognize when things seem urgent because they need to be done in the short term, but are actually not that important.
In my opinion, you are more likely to find that the things you consider the most important, do not seem so urgent in the short term, but that taking the steps towards these things slowly and consistently is actually crucial.

To find the balance between the two, one must make their priorities with both short term and long term speed in mind.
They are two different types of speed, and striking this balance between the two is key to understanding what is is to be “fast” in general.

I too need to be more conscious of what being “fast” means to me, starting now.
