3月3日のひな祭り、伝統を楽しみながら、おいしい食事を楽しむのもいいですね。今日は志太地区にこの時期に飾る天神人形についてお話しします。

天神人形

Hina matsuri, or Doll Festival, is a special tradition every March 3 to celebrate the happiness and good health of young Japanese girls.
ひな祭りは女の子の幸せと成長をお祝いする3月3日に行われる特別な伝統です。

This tradition is generally for girls.
この風習は普通女の子のためのものです。

On the other hand, the celebration for young boys is held every May 5.
一方、男の子のお祝いは5月5日に行われます。

Families with boys display warrior dolls, or samurai armor, helmet, or sword.
男児のいる家庭では五月人形を飾ります。

In Shida region in Shizuoka prefecture, they have a different tradition.
静岡県の志太地区では、違った伝統があります。

They also display a type of doll for boys on March 3 or April 3.
3月3日もしくは4月3日に男の子のための人形を飾るのです。

They set up a doll called "Tenjin doll", which portrays Michizane Sugawara.
天神人形と呼ばれる人形を出します。その人形は菅原道真公を表現しています。

He was deified as a deity of academics in the Heian period.
菅原道真公は平安時代に学問の神として神格化されました。

Shida region is a big production site of Japanese green tea.
志太地区は日本茶の一大産地です。

Residents there are very busy with green tea harvesting at the beginning of May.
この地域の人々は5月の初めはお茶の収穫で本当に忙しくなります。

So, people in the past held the boy's festival on March 3, the same time as Hina doll festival.
ですから、昔の人々は男の子のお祭りをひな祭りと同じ3月3日に行いました。（諸説あり）

This tradition is still being practiced in Shida region.
この伝統は今でも志太地方にあります。

In some areas, the boy’s festival is held on April 3.
この男の子のお祀りを4月3日に行う地区もあります。

　志太地区の天神人形がズラリと並んでいて圧巻です。

周りの装飾も豪華です。静岡のものづくりの伝統を感じます。
