静岡市葵区の中心部で楽しめるイルミネーション、正式名称は「青葉シンボルロード イルミネーション～おまちワンダーランド～」だそうです。両替町の隣は、以前は「下石町」でした。ちょうど青葉シンボルロードの辺りです。

このイベントは静岡の人々にクリスマスがすぐそこまで来ていることを知らせます。

Next to the bright illuminations, there is a stone monument reminding people of Sumpu’s history.

明るいイルミネーションの隣に、駿府の歴史を思い出させてくれる石碑があります。

It shows that this district was originally called "Shimogoku-cho" in the Edo period.

この地区が元々江戸時代には「下石町」と呼ばれていたことを示しています。

According to "Sunkoku Zasshi," a historical collection written on Suruga Province in the Edo period, selling grains in the city of Sumpu was defined to certain districts of "Kamigoku-cho" and "Shimogoku-cho" during Lord Ieyasu’s ruling period.

江戸時代の駿河国について書かれた歴史書の「駿国雑志」によると、家康公の治世、駿府のまちで穀物を売ることは「上石町」と「下石町」という一定の地域に規定されました。

Kamigoku-cho was the grain-merchant district in the north.

上石町は北にある穀物商人の地区です。

Compared to Kamigoku-cho, this district was located to the south, so it was called "Shimo-Gokucho."

上石町と比較して、この地区は南にありました。ですから「下石町」と呼ばれました。

"Shimo" means south in Kyoto, and this terminology spread to other cities.

「下」は京都で南を意味します。そしてこの専門用語が他の都市にも広がりました。

According to a historical record, Shimogoku-cho had 72 households and 343 residents in 1692.

記録によると、1692年下石町には72世帯、343人の人々が住んでいました。

Shimogoku-cho as the grain-merchant district didn't last long.

穀物商人の地区としての下石町は長くは続きませんでした。

It seems that the area transformed into a place for artisans, such as wood craftsmen and lacquer painters.

その地域は木工職人や漆塗職人のような職人の場所に変化したようです。

In September 1945, just after World War II, Shimogoku-cho district was abolished and merged into the other districts of Ryogae-cho,Tokiwa-cho and Shichiken-cho.

第2次世界大戦の直後、1945年9月、下石町は廃止され、両替町、常磐町、七間町と言う他の町内に統合されました。

When visiting the illuminations on Aoba Symbol Road, make sure to stop by this stone monument as a historical reminder.
