増善寺は今川氏親公の菩提寺で葵区慈悲尾にあります。徳川家康公と増善寺の逸話をご存じでしょうか。

Matsudaira clan needed to have an ally with the Imagawa clan at that time.
松平家は今川家とその当時同盟を結ぶ必要がありました。

Matsudaira Takehchiyo（young Ieyasu）was brought to Sumpu as a political hostage in 1549.
松平竹千代（若き家康）は1549年に政治的人質として駿府に連れてこられました。

At that time, he was only eight years old.
その時、彼はまだ8歳にすぎませんでした。

He sometimes came to Zozenji Temple because he knew the Buddhist priest, Tozen .
彼は時々、増善寺にやってきました。等膳（とうぜん）和尚を知っていたからです。

One day, Takechiyo found a little bird in the temple grounds and playfully teased it.
ある日、竹千代は寺の境内で小さな鳥を見つけ、ふざけて遊んでいました。

However, local children who watched Takechiyo thought he was bullying the bird and scolded him for it.
しかし、竹千代を見た地元の子どもたちは、竹千代が鳥をいじめていると思い、彼を叱りつけました。

As a result, Takechiyo was beaten by the children.
そして、竹千代はその子どもたちに叩かれました。

Takechiyo complained about this situation to Priest Tozen.
竹千代はこの事について等膳和尚に文句を言いました。

Priest Tozen strongly reminded Takechiyo that beating and killing little animals were prohibited in all the premises of Buddhist temples.
等膳和尚は竹千代に寺の中で小さな動物をいじめたり殺生してはならないと強く言い聞かせました。

During their conversation,　Takechiyo told the priest that he was sad he could not visit his father’s grave because of his position as a political hostage in Sumpu.
そうして話している間に、竹千代は駿府に人質としているがために、父親の墓参りもできないのがとても悲しいのだと和尚に伝えました。

He said, "I want to go to my hometown Okazaki just once to visit my family graveyard."
彼はこう言ったのです。「一度でいい。故郷の岡崎に行って、松平家の墓参りをしたい」

Priest Tozen decided to grant Takechiyo’s wish.
等膳和尚は竹千代の願いをかなえてあげようと決めました。

In fact, Zozenji Temple has a record of Priest Tozen putting this plan into action.
実際、増善寺には等膳和尚がこの計画を実行に移したことが記録に残っています。

According to the document, Takechiyo was hidden in a bamboo clothes box and delivered to the port of Mochifune(the present-day Mochimune) .
記録によると、竹千代は葛籠（つづら）の中に隠され、持舟（もちふね）の湊に運ばれました。（現在の用宗）

At that time, the guide to the port was a local named Miura Seibei,who belonged to an old family living near the port.
その時、港まで案内したのは三浦清兵衛で、湊近くに住む由緒ある家の者でした。

Takechiyo, hidden in a bamboo clothes box ,was secretly boarded onto the ship.
竹千代は葛籠に隠され、こっそりと船に乗せられました。

He was able to visit his family graveyard and return to Sumpu without anyone knowing about it.
彼は墓参りが出来、誰にも知られずに駿府に戻ってこられました。

When Takechiyo became an adult and a stronger daimyo, he made Priest Tozen the head priest of the prestigious Buddhist temple, Kasuisai.
竹千代が成人して、強い大名になった時、彼は等膳和尚を有名な仏教寺院、可睡斎の住職にしました。

Lord Iyeasu gave big properties to this priest to repay his kindness.
家康公はこの和尚様からもらった恩に報いるため、財産を与えました。
