久能山東照宮には何回行ってもまた行きたくなります。今回はかつて存在した大きな五重の塔についてお伝えいたします。

Go-ju-no-to-ato (Former site of the Five Storied Pagoda)

五重塔址

A five-story pagoda was built in Kunozan Toshogu Shrine following an order by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu.

三代将軍徳川家光公の命の下、久能山東照宮に五重塔が建てられました。

With his given order, Sumpu Castle's chamberlain, Matsudaira Katsumasa, headed the building of this tower with brilliant design.

将軍の命を受け、駿府城城代である松平勝政がこの造営を指揮し、豪華な塔を造りました。

The construction started in 1635 and finished on the New Year holidays in the following year.

建築は1635年に始まり、翌年の正月に完成しました。

It was 30 meters high, and was the symbol of Kunozan Toshogu Shrine.

30メートルの高さがあり、久能山東照宮のシンボルでした。

However, at the beginning of the Meiji period, this tower was dismantled under the policy of ‘Shimbutsu bunri’, which promoted the separation between Buddhism and Shintoism.

しかし、明治時代の初期、仏教と神道の分離を進める「神仏分離」の政策の下、この塔は解体されました。

Today, only the foundation stones remain, and the original cycads transplanted from Sumpu Castle flourish.

今日、礎石だけが残され、駿府城から移植されたソテツが勢いよく茂っています。
