　アメリカから帰国したとき、わしの英語力は日常生活に支障
のあれへん水準やった。帰国して英検１級に合格し、通訳ガイ
ドの国家試験に合格し、名古屋の大規模予備校や専門学校で講
師として採用されたからうちの判断は正しい思た。
 
　ところが、わしの塾にやってきた京大「医学部」受験生の方
から
「せんせの英語で京大二次で８割を超えられまっか？」
　との質問を受けた。調べてみたら京大の二次試験は「和訳」
と「英作文」だけちゅう大学入試問題としては異質のもので、
客観テストと異なり自分で採点でけへんものやった。
 
　さらに調べてみると、このテストでの最高点は８割。医学
部は定員が１００名ほど。つまり、東大理Ⅲと並んで全国ト
ップクラス。そのため、そんな生徒を指導できる講師は大規
模予備校にもおれへんことやった。
 
　河合塾、駿台、東進、Z会といった知名度の高い予備校かて
、京大二次の英語で８割を超えられると実証してる講師はお
れへんかった。TOEICで満点やら、英検１級やら、帰国子女
やら、ほな実証になれへん。
 
　そのため、うちは京大「医学部」受験生と保護者の方に納
得してもらえる水準まで英語力を高めることだけに専念して
きた。
　When I returned from the U.S., my English proficiency was at a level
that would not interfere with my daily life. I thought I had made the
right decision because I had passed the Eiken Level 1 test upon
returning to Japan, passed the national exam for interpreter guide,
and was employed as an instructor at a large prep school and
vocational college in Nagoya.
 
　However, I received a comment from a student who came to my school
to take the Kyoto University "medical school" entrance exam.
However, I received a question from a student who came to my school
to take the Kyoto University "medical school" entrance examination:
"Can you get above 80% in the second stage of Kyoto University with
your English?"
 
　I did some research and found out that the Kyoto University second
stage exam was not so easy to pass. I found out that Kyoto
University's second test is different from other university
entrance examinations in that it consists only of "Japanese
translation" and "English composition," and unlike objective tests,
it is not graded by the test takers themselves.
 
　Upon further investigation, I found that the highest score on
this test was 80%. The medical school has a capacity of about 100
students. In other words, it is one of the top schools in Japan
along with the University of Tokyo's Science III. Therefore,
there was no instructor, not even at a large prep school, who
could teach such a student.
 
　Even at well-known prep schools such as Kawaijuku, Sundai,
Tōshin, and Z-kai, there were no instructors who had proven
that they could get above 80% on the second English exam of
Kyoto University.
　Therefore, I have concentrated only on improving my English
ability to a level that would satisfy students and their
parents who are taking the Kyoto University "medical school"
entrance exam.
