外国人観光客をご案内していると、制服を着た小学生を見かけて話題になることがあります。小学生が制服を着ている姿はアメリカ人にとっては珍しいようですね。イギリスではハリーポッターのイメージがあって、小学生が制服を着ているのは普通の光景のように思います。日本の教育制度について英語で話せるようになると、海外の学校との違いがわかって話題が広がるかもしれません。

まず日本では小中学校が義務教育です。６歳で小学校に入学し、小学校に６年間、中学校に３年間通います。ほとんどの生徒は近隣の公立の小中学校に通います。しかし一部の生徒は私立の小中学校に通っています。公立の小中学校は無償ですが、私立の学校はお金がかかります。それでも私立の学校に通う理由があります。日本は学歴社会で有名大学に入ることがよいとされています。近年少子化のため、以前より入学しやすくなったように思えるのですが、名門校に入るのはまだまだ困難です。有名大学に入学するためには、有名小学校、幼稚園でスタートを切らなければならないと考える親がいるのです。競争が小学生から始まっているのです。

Elementary and junior high schools are compulsory in Japan. In Japan, children enter elementary school at 6 years old. They go to elementary school for six years and then junior high school for three years. Most of the students go to nearby public schools, but some of them go to private elementary and junior high schools. There are some reasons why they choose private schools even though the tuition for private schools is more expensive than that for public schools. In Japan, academic background is important so many people still think that it is important to go to renowned universities. Though it seems that entering a school is easier than before because of the decreasing birthrate, it is still difficult to enter some high-status schools. Some parents think they must have their children start off in good elementary schools and kindergartens in order to help them enter famous universities. Even young children have to start a rat race studying for entering famous school. 

また、ほとんどの学生が学校だけでは足りないので、競争が激しい入学試験の準備のために、放課後に「塾」に通わなければなりません。だからこそ日本の教育費は高く、親の負担が大きいと言われています。日本では教育格差が大問題となっています。

Many students need to attend private schools called "juku" to prepare for the competitive Japanese entrance examinations after school because they think that it is not enough just to go to school. It is said that it costs too much to educate children and parents need to bear a heavy burden of educational costs. So educational disparity between rich and poor people is a serious problem in Japan. 

大学で勉強するにもお金がかかります。国公立大学の年間学費は平均５３万円、私立大学の場合は約１００万円です。子どもを一人にかかる費用が高く、少子化の原因のひとつだと言われています。

It costs much to study at a university. In the case of national universities or universities run by local governments, the average annual tuition fee is 530,000 yen while that of private universities is 1 million yen. It costs a lot of money to raise one children. It is said that it is the major cause of the declining birthrate. 

お金の話になると話題が暗くなりがちですね。他にも日本はどこを歩いてもきれいだと言われ、学校で掃除の時間があり、幼いときから掃除の大切さを学んでいるから、という話題になったこともあります。高校生から学校はお弁当を友達と一緒に食べるのが楽しみ、という話にもなったことがありました。お弁当は親の子どもへの愛情の証だと言えるでしょう。親が子どもを思う気持ち、よい教育を受けて立派に成長してもらいたいという気持ちは世界各国共通ではないでしょうか。
