1　英国で教育を受ける

海外に住むときに、ことば、食べ物、生活習慣にも増して、子女がいる場合には教育がとても重要になると思います。
日本人学校（または他の民族系の学校）がある場合にはそちらだし、英国の場合には、インター、現地校、現地校にも、普通の公立、Grammer School、私立の学校と結構と選択肢があるものです。
いろいろな教育方針があると思いますので、人それぞれ、また子供の性格や特性を見た上で本人が納得する形で教育を受けることが一番だと思います。
しかし、いろいろな情報を得た上でも、最初からぴったりとフィットする学校を、しかも中学校の学齢で見つけるのはなかなか難しいとも思いました。
一方、2024年現在の英国特にロンドンは、おそらく世界でも有数の多民族都市で、こんな多様性に溢れた環境を是非子供たちに触れさせてあげたいという気持ちが湧いてくるのも確かです。

私の場合には、娘が日本の中学校に入学する学年で、それも娘が殆ど英語を話せない状況から試行錯誤が約半年間続きました。

2　英国公立現地校（ロンドン）へ

先ず、来英後直ぐにロンドンの公立の女子高に入学しました。学年で言うとYear8（Secondary Schoolで日本で言う中学校）ですが、中学校からの公立校は少し厳しいかなと思いながらも、女子校でもあり、落ち着いて勉強にも部活にも活躍できるかなと思っていました。
多分、この環境にすんなりと解け込めれれば、公立校なので学費も不要ですし、多様性ということで言えば、間違いなくロンドンの縮図がそこにあると思いますので選択肢としては捨てがたいと思います。
一方、公立校故なのが、（この学校だけの例ですが）生徒数が多くて先生の指導の目は細かくは廻らず、基本的にリアクティブな対応となっていること。女子の場合は特にトイレが汚くそれが気になるため、日本人の目から見るとほぼ使用不可能な状態であること。多様性があるが故に、様々な教育水準の生徒がいて、日本の授業に想像される一定の教育の質が担保されている授業内容を望むことは難しいこと。等があり、娘は学校の選択について悩み始めました。

そもそも娘は、落ち着いた環境で、いろいろな文化的背景を持った友達と、英国特有の規範やマナーを守りながら生活したいという希望を持っていたため、多くの点でミスマッチが生じていると思い、数か月通ったところで英国の私立の学校に転校することを決めました。

この、英国での教育に何を望むか、という点はその後の学校生活にも大きな影響を与えますので、じっくりと考え、子供と確認を取っておくことは重要だなと思いました。

3　英国私立学校（ロンドン）に通う

娘の様子をみて、ロンドンの西側にある、私立の英国の伝統的な私立の学校を見に行きました。小高い丘の上にある学校は景色も良く、手入れされた庭には綺麗に花が咲き誇っていて、風に揺れる緑が心を落ち着かせます。生徒が構内の案内をしてくれました。中学校一年生の女の子が物怖じせずにお父さん位の歳の男性にしっかりと案内をしてくれる。日本ではなかなこういうやり取りを世代を超えて行うのは難しい気がするのですが、これはＵＫのフラットな関係性が築けるいい点かなと思います。一通り校内の案内をしてもらい、案内役の生徒たちが集まる場所に戻ると、女子たちは本当に屈託のない笑顔で、「ケラケラケラ」と笑います。本当に愛され、満足な生活を送っているのだろうなと、みんなが眩しく見えます。
ここであれば、素敵な出会いがあり、人生の一時期を有意義に過ごせるだろうなと僕は思いました。

娘にはその雰囲気を伝え、でも期待はし過ぎない様にと伝えた上で意向を確認すると、そこに行きたいとのことでした。
彼女も頑張り受験を終え、無事登校を開始しました。友人との会話も増え、クリケットにチャレンジしたり、先生と交渉して劇の役を貰ったりと、楽しく生活を開始しました。

少し学費が掛かり、日本円が弱いこの2024年の断面では高いと思うのですが、日本の価格水準に置き換えると、日本の私立の学校と、まあ同じ水準なのかなと思いました。

僕は毎日、娘が学校に行くと、あの小高い丘に爽やかな風が吹き、緑が揺れ、女子たちが屈託のない笑顔で笑いあっている姿が頭に浮かびます。

今度は、公立校で起こったいろいろな出来事についても書いてみたいなと思います。

1. Educating Children in the UK

Living abroad, education becomes incredibly important, even more so than language, food, and lifestyle habits, especially when you have children. There are various options available, such as Japanese schools (or other ethnic schools), international schools, local schools, including regular state (public) schools, Grammar Schools, and private schools in the UK. With the variety of educational philosophies, I believe it's crucial for each individual to choose an education that they and their child are comfortable with, considering the child's personality and characteristics. However, even with ample information, finding the perfect fit school, especially at the age of secondary education, can be quite challenging. Moreover, as of 2024, London, particularly, is one of the most multicultural cities globally, and I feel a strong urge to expose my children to this diversity.

In my case, my daughter was at the age to enter a Japanese junior high school, and she had little proficiency in English, which led to about six months of trial and error.

2.Attending a Local State School in the UK (London)

Initially, my daughter enrolled in a local London state girls' high school, equivalent to Year 8 in the UK (which corresponds to junior high school in Japan). While I thought it might be a bit strict coming from a Japanese junior high school, I hoped she would thrive academically and in extracurricular activities in an all-girls environment. Perhaps, if she could easily adapt to this environment, attending a state school would be advantageous, considering it's tuition-free and represents the diversity of London. However, there were some challenges. The large student population meant less individual attention from teachers, leading to primarily reactive responses. Additionally, particularly for girls, the school facilities, especially the toilets, were not well-maintained, making them almost unusable from a Japanese perspective. Moreover, due to the diversity, it was challenging to expect a consistently high level of education across all subjects, as is often found in Japanese classrooms. Consequently, my daughter began to contemplate her school choice.

Originally, my daughter hoped for an environment where she could peacefully coexist with friends from various cultural backgrounds while adhering to British norms and manners. Given the mismatch on various fronts, after a few months, she decided to transfer to a private school in the UK.

Deciding what one expects from education in the UK can significantly impact the subsequent school experience, so I realized the importance of careful consideration and communication with my child.

3.Attending a Private School in the UK (London)

Observing my daughter's situation, I visited a traditional private school in the west of London. Situated atop a small hill, the school offered stunning views, with meticulously maintained gardens adorned with blooming flowers, and the gentle swaying of greenery had a calming effect. A fellow student confidently guided me around the campus. If we were in Japan it must be a little difficult, witnessing a first-year female student confidently leading the tour for a middle-aged man, and I realized the positive aspect of the flat relationships fostered in the UK. After a comprehensive tour of the campus, as we returned to the gathering spot, the girls greeted us with genuine, carefree smiles. They seemed genuinely loved and content, casting a bright light on their lives. At that moment, I felt she could have wonderful experiences and spend a meaningful period of her life here.

After conveying the atmosphere to my daughter, ensuring not to raise expectations too high, we confirmed her intentions. She expressed her desire to attend the school. She successfully completed the entrance exam, and her school attendance began without any issues. She began to enjoy her life, engaging in conversations with friends, trying cricket, negotiating with teachers to get roles in plays, etc.

Although the fees were a bit high, especially considering the weak Japanese yen in 2024, comparing it to Japanese private schools, it seemed to be at a similar level in terms of pricing.

Every day, as my daughter goes to school, I envision the refreshing breeze blowing over that small hill, the swaying greenery, and the girls laughing heartily with carefree smiles.
