Okay, so let's move on to today's episode.
This morning, I was talking about English learning as well as the related business with my husband who is an ESL (English as a second language) teacher. At the time, he mentioned the word "edutainment".

さて、今日も本題に入っていきたいと思います。
今朝、ESL（第二言語としての英語）の先生をしているの旦那と英語教育とそれにまつわるビジネスについて話をしていました（真面目か）
そのときに、旦那がエデュテインメントという言葉を使っていたんですよね。

The concept might be helpful for you to choose what types of language schools you should choose when you study abroad. Also, the concept would be great if you wonder why your English skills are not improving while going to a language school.
So, in this episode, I will talk about what edutainment is and then talk about my thoughts regarding English learning based on my own experiences. And finally, I'll provide tips to consider when you choose a language school. Hope you enjoy it!

このエデュテインメントというコンセプトは留学した時の語学学校選びや、英会話教室や語学学校に行かれているけれど、英語が伸び悩んでいるなぁと感じている方には知っておくといいコンセプトかなと思いました。

そんなわけでエデュテインメントについて3つの大きな括りでお話ししたいと思います。
1）エデュテインメントとは？
2）自分の経験をもとにした英語学習、エデュテインメントへの考え
3）語学学校などを選ぶときに考えてみるといいこと　
についてお話をしたいと思います。

So first of all, let's talk about the concept of Edutainment.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the definition of Edutainment is
”the process of entertaining people at the same time as you are teaching them something, and the products, such as television programmes or software, that do this." (Cambridge Dictionary)

さてまずは、エデュテインメントとはなに？というところからお話をしたいと思います。
ケンブリッジ英英辞書の説明を私なりに日本語に訳してみますと、
エデュテインメントとは、人々を楽しませる過程において、何かを教えたりするもの。もしくはそういったコンテンツなどがあげられる。例としては、テレビ番組やソフトウェアなどである。

Based on the definition, English learning Youtube, and English learning apps using movies will be categorised as Edutainment type of learning.

この定義から考えると、
例えば英語系Youtubeとか、映画の1シーンなどを使った英語学習アプリなどがこの類に入りますかね。

In terms of language school, in my opinion, there are mainly two types. One is edutainment type and the other is outcome-focused type.

これは、実は語学学校も同じようなものがあるんです。
まず、語学学校についてお話しすると、個人的には語学学校って大きく2つのタイプがあると思っています。
このエデュテインメント型と結果重視型の2つですね。

Edutainment-type school's base product is English learning.
However, schools also provide opportunities to forget your daily life or extraordinary experiences such as talking to someone whom you would not normally meet in your daily life. For example, a person whose appearance is completely different like blonde hair, blue eyes and so on.
I mean they are selling experiences rather than English learning itself. So, this type of school tends to focus on customer reviews instead of the outcome of language learning.

エデュテインメント型の語学学校はベースとして英語学習を提供するというのがあるのですが、
実際にサービスとして売っているのは非日常の提供が多いかなぁと思います
例えば、普段の生活で出会えないような人と話すとかですね。
どんな人かというとざっくり見た目が違う人ですね。
代表的な例で言うと目が青いブロンドの英語を話す方と話す経験といいますか。
あとは、他の国の子と話す経験ですとか。
(それがいいとか悪いとかの話ではありません)

ここで私が言いたいのは、英語教育をベースにして売ってるんですけど、
英語力向上そのものにフォーカスしているというよりは非日常の経験を提供しているということですかね。
旦那（英語の先生としての）の経験からすると、こういう学校は英語力の向上そのものよりも、顧客満足度が重視されるいうことでした。
（英語力向上もあるんでしょうが、サービスが良いかどうかの方が重視されるということですかね？）

On the other hand, the outcome focus type is selling, literally, a fast track to English competence. So, preparation schools for IELTS and TOEFL will be categorised into this type. It sounds like a great school, however, it is like a cram school sometimes. You need to drill as much as you can and focus on achieving your preferred score for the English proficiency test. Therefore these types of schools focus on outcome over enjoyment.

さて、次は結果重視型の学校です。
こちらの学校は文字通り、早く結果を出す　というサービスを提供してますね。
例えば、IELTSとかTOEFL、英検専門の学校がこういったものに当たるかと思います。
こう聞くと、英語力向上のためには結果重視型だな！と思われるかと思いますが、塾みたいなんですよ。
繰り返しの練習がたくさんして、英語のテストの目標スコアに近づける！！！といった感じです。
つまり、英語を楽しむという感じがないので、単調と言いますか、つまらないと思う方もいますね。

From now, I will talk about my own experience with both types.
I went to an edutainment type of school when I came to Brisbane.
The school gave me a lot of opportunities to meet new friends and have a social life such as attending BBQs and so on. It was actually fun. I have some friends I am still in contact with from this school.

さて、ここからは両方のタイプにいったことのある私の経験談をお話しします。
ブリスベンに来た当初は、エンタメ系の学校に行っていたんですね。
この学校は、たくさん友達もできましたし、BBQとかソーシャルイベントの機会もたくさんあって非常に楽しかったことを記憶しています。
（国籍関係なく）いまだに連絡とっているのはこの学校で出会った子たちですね。
楽しい思い出がたくさんあります。やっぱり

After 8 months, I changed to a school that focuses on IELTS. I need to get 6.5 overall at the time in a short period. ( I think around 2 months or so)
The school made me drained every day as a lot of practising for the IELTS test. It was like an English boot camp.
I feel I could do the intensive course because of the short term.

そのエンタメ系の学校に通って８ヶ月後、IELTSを重視している学校に転校しました。
その当時、2ヶ月でIELTSという英語試験のoverall　6.5（英検の準1級〜1級に相当するそうです）取らなきゃいけなかったんですよね。
英語ブートキャンプかの如くIELTSという英語のテストの勉強しましたから毎日くったくたでした。
（結果重視型の名の通り、スコアもきちんとゲットできました）
今考えると、あれは2ヶ月という短い期間だったからブートキャンプ生活ができたなと思います。
ここでパスできていなかったら今のわたしはおりませんーーー。

Speaking of which school would be better for you to choose, it depends on you.
It would be better for you to break into your goal, your personality, and the period you have to achieve the goal.
If you need to achieve a high enough IELTS score in a short period, it would be better for you to go to an outcome-focused school.
If you feel like an entertaining or fun atmosphere is needed for learning, it would be better to go to an edutainment type of school.
And if you feel like your English level isn't improving as you would have expected, it may be better to work out what type of school you are enrolled in now.  

では、どっちの語学学校を選んだらいいか　なんですが、
それは皆さん次第です。
（答えになってなくて申し訳ありません）

ただ、
・ご自分のゴール（目標）
・性格
・目標達成までにどれくらいの期間があるか
をしっかり分解されると、どちらが良いのか自ずとはっきりしてくるのではと思います。

例えば、短い期間で英語のテストをパスしないといけない　ということであれば結果重視型の方がいいかもしれませんし、
ワクワクした雰囲気で英語を勉強したいなぁということであれば、エンタメ系の学校もいいかもしれません。

そしてですね、もし英会話教室や語学学校に行っているのに、英語力が伸びないなぁなんて思われている方は、
・ご自分が行かれている学校がどっちのタイプなのか　
・ご自分のゴールがマッチしているか
をもう一度見直してみるのもいいかもしれません。

Okay, so let's summarise today's episode.
I was talking about the difference between edutainment-type schools and outcome-type schools.
In order to address the topic, I was talking to

1. What is edutainment?
The process or products that provide an opportunity to feel fun while learning something new.

2. A brief introduction to the difference between edutainment-type schools and outcome-type schools.
The difference is what kind of service that will be provided while both base products are English learning

3. My experience of both language schools and some tips you need to consider when you choose a language school.
Both have pros and cons. So you need to break into your goal, personality and the period you have to achieve the goal.

そんなわけで今日はエデュテインメント型の学校と結果重視型の学校についてお話をさせていただきました。
今日は大きく3つに分けてお話しさせていただきました。

1. エデュテインメントってなに？
楽しみながら何かを勉強する手法や、そういったサービスのこと

2. エンタメ系の語学学校と結果重視型の語学学校ってどう違うの？
エンタメ系：
楽しむことがメイン
→英語学習はベースにあるものの提供しているのは非日常の提供の場合が多い気がする（私調べ）
結果重視型：
その名の通り結果重視。そのため塾のようになりやすい。
楽しみながら勉強したい、という人には向いていないかも

3.両方のタイプの語学学校に行った私の経験と　
この二つのタイプの違いからちょっと考えてみたこと
どちらも一長一短です。
ご自分の性格、ゴール、それを達成するまでの期間を分解すると自分にあった語学学校が選べるかも。
他に英語力に伸び悩んでいる方は、自分のゴールと学校のコンセプトがあっているかもう一度考えてみるといいかもしれません。

あくまで私の経験談ですので、ふーん。
