One of my kids, who was third grade, read his class paper to me. It was the letter a teacher sent students' parents.  I was talking with my spouse when there was the letter beside me, then my son said to me "Oh, you want to read the class paper, don't you? Can I read it to you?"
He seemed to be confident in his reading ability, because he read his textbook every day as a homework. Although he sometimes asked me "how did you read this kanji?", he read aloud the paper to the end clearly.
I was glad he had a thing he feel confident about.
