第一章　三重県から日吉、そして三田へ

山崎健太は慶應義塾大学経済学部3年生の春を迎えていた。慶應は日吉キャンパスと三田キャンパスがあり、3年生からは三田キャンパスに通うことになる。

山崎は三重県伊賀市の出身で、三重県立上野高校を優秀な成績で卒業して慶應に入学した。山崎の第一志望は一橋大学経済学部だった。英語と世界史はずば抜けて得意だったものの、数学が苦手であったため、一橋大学は不合格であった。山崎は慶應の経済にB方式で合格した。

その後、彼は数学に苦しむことになる。慶應経済は、B方式で入学したとしても、数学で甘やかされることはない。しかし、「どうしても経済学を勉強したい」という情熱が、彼を動かした。微分積分や線形代数を学習し、マクロ経済学でもミクロ経済学でも優秀な成績を修めた。

三田キャンパスになってからは、ゼミに所属した。新興国がマクロ的にどうやって経済成長するか、そして経済危機をどうやって乗り越えるか、を研究した。

彼はただのがり勉ではなく、スポーツマンでもあった。高校時代もサッカー部と勉学を両立して、慶應経済、慶應商、早稲田政経、早稲田商、上智経済、神戸経済後期に合格していた。もちろん、そんな彼を女子が放っておくはずもなく、サッカー部の女子マネージャーからモテていた。山崎は上野高校の女子マネージャーでも一番美人で、成績優秀だった北岡瞳と交際していた。彼より2歳年下だった。瞳も慶應経済を受験したが不合格となり、上智大学経済学部に入学していた。2年間は遠距離恋愛だったが、晴れて瞳も上京した。

二人は東京都大田区池上に住んでいた。同居したかったが、さすがにまだ早いということで、近くのアパートに住んでいた。

「ケンちゃん、もう少しで就活だね！でも、ケンちゃんなら絶対にいい会社から内定もらえるよ！」

瞳はそう言ってくれた。山崎は今まで以上に、勉学にもスポーツにも力を注いだ。

第二章　ITベンチャーの世界に飛び込む

在学中、山崎はITベンチャー企業の世界を発見した。本社は渋谷にあり、偶然、瞳と遊んでいるときに、社員たちが会話しているのを聞いたのだ。

「今度の資金調達、大丈夫かな？」
「大丈夫だろう。俺たちのつくったSaaSは世界に通用するものだ。中小零細企業の経営を救うSaaSテクノロジーだ。中国やインドの企業からも引き合いがある」

彼は会話に割り込んだ。

「慶應義塾大学経済学部3年生の岩崎と申します。御社で、インターンとして働かせてもらえませんか？新興国の経済ダイナミズムと、SaaSのような先端テクノロジーに興味があるんです」

彼の勢いに圧倒され、ITベンチャーの社員も採用を承諾した。

彼は、ペースの速い開発環境と革新的なアイデアに魅了された。一度SaaSをつくって終わり・・・ではなくて、顧客からのフィードバック内容を受けて、SaaSを修正するサイクルがあった。彼ははじめてプログラミング言語を覚えた。C++やPython、Javaなどを習得した彼は、インターンでも大活躍した。

第三章　体調不良

何事にも熱中しすぎる岩崎は、勉学・サッカー・インターンの3つでオーバーワークとなり、体調を崩してしまった。ゼミの時間なのに、彼は自宅で眠っていた。当然、ゼミの教授は怒ってしまった。

「山崎君は何をしているのだ？！」

ゼミ同級生の佐々木は、何とか彼を擁護した。

「彼は、疲れて、自宅で療養中なのだと思います。電話しても連絡がとれないので、彼の自宅に行って確認してみます」

佐々木が彼の自宅に到着すると、鍵が開いており、中に入ると・・・苦しそうに倒れている山崎を見つけた。

「大変だ！救急車を呼ぼう！ガールフレンドの瞳さんにも教えないと！」

佐々木と瞳は、山崎を見舞いに池上総合病院に行った。

「すまない・・・頑張りすぎたみたいだ。これからは、少しペースを落とすよ」

「ゼミのみんなも心配しているぞ。教授には、俺から説明しておくから。今はとにかく安め」

「ケンちゃん、早く治るといいね。食べられそうな、ヨーグルトとか持ってきてるから」

二人は優しく山崎を見守ってくれた。

第四章　就職活動・・・外資系コンサルへの挑戦

卒業が近づくにつれ、山崎は自分の将来について考え始めた。

「俺は、元々、経済や経営が勉強したくて、大学進学を決めた。そして、ITベンチャーでは、最先端のテクノロジーに触れた。もっと、大きなフィールドで、ITと経営の仕事がしたい！」

自然と、山崎は、世界最大のコンサルティングファームであり、なおかつ、IBMと肩を並べる巨大IT企業でもあるアクセンチュアを第一志望と決めていた。

無謀にも彼は、「俺はアクセンチュアしか受けない」と決めていた。少し頑固なところがあったのだ。

「ケンちゃん、もし、落ちたらどうするの？」

「大丈夫、絶対に落ちないように面接の練習をするよ」

山崎は自己分析、採用プロセスや企業の研究、面接の練習を始めた。

エントリーシートは無事突破し、最初のグループディスカッションもそつなくこなした。そして、一次面接の日を迎えた。

面接当日、山崎は緊張しながらも決意を固めていた。 彼はすべての質問に自信を持って答え、経済学やサッカー、ITに打ち込んだことを示した。 面接官は感銘を受け、その場で最終面接へ進めることを約束した。

最終面接・・・山崎は過去に一度もないほど緊張していた。

「やばいな・・・高校サッカーの県大会や、大学受験よりもずっと緊張する」

その緊張が裏目に出てしまった・・・最終面接で、山崎は不合格となってしまったのだ・・・。

第五章　恋人の裏切り

「なによ・・・あれだけ自信満々だったのに・・・IBMやアビームも受ければ良かったのに・・・別れようかしら？」

瞳は、同じ上智大学で、大手広告代理店の電通に内定した佐藤という男に乗り換えることにした。

「ケンちゃん・・・ごめんね。ケンちゃんの、真っすぐなところが好きだけど、頑固なところはちょっと・・・佐藤さんという、好きな人がもういるの」

山崎は信じられない気持ちでいっぱいだった・・・上野高校時代からずっと一緒だった瞳が、他の男のところへ行くなんて・・・打ちひしがれて、涙がこぼれてきた。今まで、サッカーでも、大学受験でも挫折知らずで進んできた山崎にとって、人生はじめての挫折であった・・・。

第六章　インドへの旅立ち

山崎は、留年して、もう一度アクセンチュアに挑戦することを決意していた。そして、次は、IBMやアビーム、NEC、富士通、NTTデータも受けることを決めていた。

留年の許可をとるため、三重県の実家に帰っていた。

父親の俊也は、重い口を開いた。

「そうか・・・お前が一生懸命努力して、落ちたものは仕方がない。1年間だけ、猶予をやる。だが、同じ失敗はするなよ。緊張しないように、もっと度胸をつけろ」

彼の父は、関西電力の部長であった。1年間留年させるだけの収入は十分にあった。

「ありがとう、お父さん。俺、次は必ずアクセンチュアに内定するから。そして、5年間の学費は、アクセンチュアで稼いだ給料から返すよ」

「そんなものはいらん。とにかく頑張れ。俺が言うことはそれだけだ」

山崎は、度胸をつけるために、インドへ短期留学することにした。デリーの大学で、まだまだ発展途上の地で、自分に度胸をつけようと考えたのだ。

デリーに降り立った彼は、インドの空気が新鮮に感じた。列車は、あふれかえるほどの人が乗っていた。彼も列車に飛び乗り、アパートへ向かった。

元々英語が得意だった彼は、インドの大学でもすぐに友人ができた。そして、ガールフレンドもできた。彼女の名前はプージャで、大学2年生だ。彼女は日本が好きで、3年生から早稲田大学国際教養学部に編入する予定らしい。彼女に、日本での自分の挫折経験を話した。

「え・・・そんなひどいこと。私だったら、あなたが不合格になっても、見捨てないわ」

山崎はプージャを深く愛した。

インドでは、自分の精神を整える訓練をした。自分の心から焦りや動揺を追い出す訓練をしたのだ。

第七章　アクセンチュアへの再挑戦

山崎は、もう一度、アクセンチュアを受けることにした。
エントリーシートやグループディスカッションは、楽勝で通過することができた。

再度の一次面接でも、ケース面接の質問が出された。

「日本でAIやデータサイエンティストの人手不足が言われています。AIやデータサイエンティストの就業者を2倍にする方法を考えてください」

山崎は、自信満々に答えた。

面接官は・・・「素晴らしい。山崎さん、合格です。最終面接へお進みください」

「やった・・・ここまでは、去年と同じだ。次の最終面接でも、絶対に冷静でいられるようにしよう」

彼は、平常心を保とうとした。インドで何度も訓練したことだ。今回は、何の緊張もなく、面接に臨んだ。

最終面接は、アクセンチュアのパートナー（執行役員）が面接官であった。

「・・・そうか・・・そこまでわが社に。君の実力と執念、そして新たに身に着けた精神の正常を保つ能力、すべて完璧だ。内定だ。おめでとう」

山崎は、信じられない気持ちだった・・・「やった、これで、俺はアクセンチュアの社員になれるんだ・・・コンサルタントになれるんだ・・・」

恋人のプージャや、ゼミの同級生の佐々木たちと、お祝いした。山崎はべろんべろんに酔っていた。そして、「プージャ、アクセンチュアで仕事が安定したら、君と結婚したいと思っている」と、気持ちを打ち明けた。

アクセンチュア入社後も、山崎は快進撃を続けた。新卒1年目とは思えないパフォーマンスを発揮し、見事、会計システム導入プロジェクトの成功に貢献した。

そのころ、瞳の恋人の佐藤は、電通の激務に耐えられず、退職してしまっていた。

瞳は、信じられない気持ちだった。

「え・・・どうしよう。そうだ、ケンちゃん、どうしてるかな？」

瞳は連絡し、山崎と会うことにした。

「俺には、もう、結婚を約束している女性がいるんだ。諦めてくれ。佐藤と結婚しろよ」

「佐藤さん、電通を辞めちゃったのよ」

「・・・なんだって？男が失敗し、大変なときに、君は捨ててしまうのか・・・君と別れて正解だったよ」

瞳は、後悔でいっぱいだった・・・どうして、山崎を支えることができなかったのか・・・涙があふれていた。

「ごめんね、ケンちゃん。来世でもしまた会えたら、そのときは必ず、あなたのことを信じ続けるよ」

その後、山崎は最年少でアクセンチュアのマネージャーに昇進し、プージャと結婚した。とても忙しい毎日だが、充実し、次の目標ができていた。

「俺は、ビジネスマンであり、経済学者でもあると思っている。日本の経済を、立て直したい」

アクセンチュアを辞めずに、経済学の修士論文を提出し、修士号を得ていた。そして、自分の信じる経済政策を進めるため、次の目標を政治家になることに決めていた・・・山崎の挑戦は、これからも続く。

Chapter 1. From Mie Prefecture to Hiyoshi and then to Mita

Kenta Yamazaki is entering the spring of his third year in the Faculty of Economics at Keio University. Keio has two campuses, the Hiyoshi Campus and the Mita Campus.

Born in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, Yamazaki graduated from Mie Prefectural Ueno High School with excellent grades and entered Keio University. Yamazaki's first choice was the Faculty of Economics at Hitotsubashi University. Although he was exceptionally good at English and world history, he failed at Hitotsubashi University because he was weak in mathematics. Yamazaki passed Keio's economics with B method.

After that he struggled with mathematics. Keio economics won't spoil you with mathematics, even if you enter with the B method. However, he was motivated by his passion to study economics no matter what. He studied calculus and linear algebra, and got excellent grades in both macroeconomics and microeconomics.

After he moved to Mita Campus, he belonged to a seminar. He studied how emerging countries grow macroeconomically and how they overcome economic crises.

He was not just a slacker, he was also a sportsman. Even in high school, he was able to balance his studies with the soccer club, and passed Keio economics, Keio commerce, Waseda polotics and economics, Waseda commerce, Sophia economics, and Kobe economics. Of course, the girls couldn't leave him alone, and he was popular with the women's manager of the soccer club. Yamazaki was dating Hitomi Kitaoka, who was the most beautiful female manager at Ueno High School and had excellent grades. She was two years younger than him. Hitomi also took the Keio Economics exam, but she failed, and she entered the Faculty of Economics at Sophia University. It was a long-distance relationship for two years, but it was sunny and Hitomi went to Tokyo.

The two lived in Ikegami, Ota Ward, Tokyo. We wanted to live together, but it was still early, so we lived in a nearby apartment.

“Ken-chan, you’re almost job hunting! But Ken-chan will definitely get a job offer from a good company!”

Eyes said so. Yamazaki put more effort into his studies and sports than ever before.

Chapter 2 Dive into the world of IT ventures

While in school, Yamazaki discovered the world of IT venture companies. The head office is in Shibuya, and he happened to hear the employees talking while he was playing with Hitomi.

"Is it okay to raise funds this time?" ”

he interrupted the conversation.

“My name is Yamazaki, and I am a third-year student in the Faculty of Economics, Keio University. Would you like to work as an intern at your company? I am interested in the economic dynamism of emerging countries and cutting-edge technologies such as SaaS.”

Overwhelmed by his momentum, employees of IT ventures also agreed to hire him.

He was fascinated by the fast-paced development environment and innovative ideas. There was a cycle of modifying SaaS based on customer feedback, instead of creating SaaS once and ending it. He learned programming language for the first time. Having mastered C++, Python, Java, etc., he was also very active as an intern.

Chapter 3 Poor physical condition

Iwasaki, who is too enthusiastic about everything, has been overworked with study, soccer, and internship, and has fallen ill. Even though it was seminar time, he was sleeping at his house. Naturally, the seminar professor got angry.

"What are you doing, Yamazaki-kun?!"

His seminar classmate Sasaki managed to defend him.

"I think he's tired and recuperating at his house. I can't reach him by phone, so I'll go to his house and check."

When Sasaki arrived at his house, it was unlocked, and when he went inside, he found Yamazaki lying down in pain.

"It's serious! Let's call an ambulance! I have to tell my girlfriend, Hitomi-san!"

Sasaki and Hitomi went to Ikegami General Hospital to visit Yamazaki.

"I'm sorry... I think I tried too hard. I'll slow down a little from now on."

The two kindly watched over Yamazaki.

Chapter 4 Job Hunting...Challenge to Foreign Consulting

As his graduation approached, Yamazaki began to think about his future.

"Originally, I wanted to study economics and management, so I decided to go to university. Then, I came into contact with cutting-edge technology at an IT venture. I want to work in IT and management in a larger field!" Naturally, Yamazaki's first choice was Accenture, the world's largest consulting firm and a giant IT company on par with IBM.

He recklessly decided, "I'll only accept Accenture." It was a little stubborn.

"Ken-chan, what would you do if you fell?"

"Don't worry, I'll practice interviews so I don't fail." Yamazaki began self-analysis, researching recruitment processes and companies, and practicing interviews.

He successfully cleared his entry sheet and successfully completed his first group discussion. Then came the day of the first interview.

On the day of the interview, Yamazaki was tense, yet determined. He answered every question with confidence, demonstrating his passion for economics, football and IT. The interviewer was impressed and promised to advance to the final interview on the spot.

The final interview... Yamazaki was nervous like never before.

"It's dangerous... I'm much more nervous than high school soccer prefectural tournaments or university entrance exams."

That tension backfired...Yamazaki was rejected at the final interview...

Chapter 5 Lover's Betrayal

"What... he was so confident... he should have taken IBM and ABeam... Should I break up with you?"

Hitomi decides to switch to a man named Sato, who is also at Sophia University and has been offered a job offer by Dentsu, a major advertising agency.

"Ken-chan... I'm sorry. I like Ken-chan's straight-forward side, but you are a bit stubborn... I already have a man I love, Sato-san."

Yamazaki was filled with disbelief...hitomi, who had been with him since Ueno High School, going to another man...was devastated and brought tears to his eyes. It was the first setback in his life for Yamazaki, who had progressed without setbacks in both soccer and college entrance exams.

Chapter 6 Departure to India

Yamazaki decided to repeat a year and try again at Accenture. Next, he decided to apply for IBM, ABeam, NEC, Fujitsu, and NTT Data.

He had returned to his parents' home in Mie Prefecture to get permission to repeat a grade.

His father Toshiya opened his mouth heavily.

"I see... It can't be helped that you've tried so hard and failed. I'll give you a one-year grace period. But don't make the same mistake. Don't be nervous.

His father was the manager of the Kansai Electric Power Company. He made enough money to repeat a year.

"Thank you, Dad. I will definitely get a job offer at Accenture next time. And I will pay back the tuition fee for five years from the salary I earned at Accenture."

"I don't need that kind of thing. Just do your best. That's all I say."

Yamazaki decided to study in India for a short period of time to increase his courage. He was at a university in Delhi, still a developing country, and he thought he would give himself some courage.

When he landed in Delhi, he felt the fresh air of India. The train was overflowing with people. He jumped on the train and headed for his apartment.

Originally good at English, he quickly made friends at an Indian university. And I got a girlfriend. Her name is Pooja and she is a sophomore in college. She likes Japan, and she plans to transfer to Waseda University's School of International Liberal Arts from her third year. He told her about his own setbacks in Japan.

"Eh... such a terrible thing. If I were Hitomi, I wouldn't abandon you even if you failed the exam."

Yamazaki deeply loved Pooja.

In India, he practiced training his mind. He trained himself to drive his impatience and agitation out of his mind.

Chapter 7 Re-challenge to Accenture

Yamazaki decided to apply for Accenture again. I was able to pass the entry sheet and group discussion with ease.

In the first interview again, I was asked a case interview question.

“It is said that there is a shortage of AI and data scientists in Japan. Please think of a way to double the number of AI and data scientists employed.”

Yamazaki answered confidently.

The interviewer said, "Excellent. Mr. Yamazaki, you have passed. Please proceed to the final interview."

"Yeah...so far, it's the same as last year. I'll definitely try to stay calm in the next final interview."

He tried to keep his composure. He has trained many times in India. This time, I went to the interview without any tension.

Accenture's partner (executive officer) was the interviewer for the final interview.

"... I see... so much for our company. Your strength and tenacity, as well as your newly acquired ability to maintain a normal state of mind, are all perfect. You've been offered a job offer. Congratulations."

Yamazaki couldn't believe it... "Yeah, now I can become an employee of Accenture... I can become a consultant..."

He was celebrated by his girlfriend Pooja and his classmate Sasaki. Yamazaki was very drunk. “Pooja, once I get a stable job at Accenture, I want to marry you,” he said.

Even after joining Accenture, Yamazaki continued to make strides. He showed outstanding performance in his first year as a new graduate, and contributed to the success of the accounting system introduction project.

At that time, Satou, Hitomi's lover, couldn't stand the hard work at Dentsu and retired.

Her eyes were unbelievable.

"Eh... what should I do? That's right, Ken-chan, how are you doing?"

Hitomi contacted him and decided to meet with Yamazaki.

"I already have a woman I promised to marry. Give it up. Marry Sato."

“He quit Dentsu.”

"... what? When a man fails and he's in difficaulty, you abandon him... I was right to break up with you."

Her eyes were filled with tears...why was she unable to support Yamazaki...the tears were overflowing.

"I'm sorry, Ken-chan. If we meet again in the afterlife, I will definitely continue to believe in you."

After that, Yamazaki became the youngest manager at Accenture and married Pooja. It was a very busy day, but it was fulfilling and he was able to set his next goal.

"I consider myself a businessman and an economist. I want to rebuild the Japanese economy."

He didn't quit Accenture, he submitted his master's thesis in economics and earned a master's degree. And in order to advance the economic policies he believes in, he has decided that his next goal will be to become a politician... Yamazaki's challenges will continue.
