銀座でホステスとして働く20歳の女性、ゆかりは、経済やビジネスにまったく興味がなかった。彼女は身長168cmでスレンダーで、恵まれた容姿であった。彼女は仕事に付随する魅力的なライフスタイルと、毎晩の裕福な男性との会話を楽しんでいた。しかし、時間が経つにつれて、彼女は空虚感と人生の方向性の欠如を感じ始めた。

「私も、若いうちはちやほやされるけど、30歳以上になったら、何か別の仕事をしないとまずいわよね・・・」

ある晩、成功したエリート証券会社社員とおしゃべりをしているときに、彼女は株式市場と世界経済に関する彼の洞察に興味をそそられた。彼女は彼にさらに質問をし、彼の答えに熱心に耳を傾け、もっと知りたいと思った。次の数週間、彼女は経済やビジネスに関する本や記事を読み始めた。

ゆかりの経済学への関心は、すぐに情熱に変わった。 彼女はもっと学びたいと思い、一橋大学で経済学の学位を取得することに決めた。東大はさすがに無理と感じていて、一橋大学か慶應の経済ならば頑張れば合格できるかも・・・と彼女は思っていた。彼女はそれが困難な道になることを知っていたが、頑張ることを決意した。

「一橋大学経済学部は英語と数学が重要なのね。あとは世界史も頑張らないと」

彼女は、夜は接客、昼は受験勉強という過酷な毎日を送った。睡眠時間は3時間の日もあった。中学レベルから開始して、少しずつ英単語や数学の公式、世界史用語を理解していった。

彼女は喫茶店や図書館で長時間勉強し、目標を達成するために余暇を犠牲にした。

ついに、受験のときがきた。まずは、慶應の経済学部だ。

英語は、長文読解、英作文ともに合格点がとれたはずだと手ごたえを感じていた。数学も、ほとんどミスなしで答案を完成した。小論文は難しかったが、配点が低いので気にしないことにしていた。

早稲田大学政治経済学部は、共通テストで失敗したため、非常に暗いムードでの受験だった。英語と国語の総合問題をまあまあの完成度で答案を出した。

そして・・・本命の一橋大学経済学部の試験がきた。ゆかりは、ギリギリで共通テストの点数での足切りを避けることができた。英語は、長文読解・リスニング・自由英作文どれもうまくできた。数学は、難問が出されたが、基本的な問題を優先して解くことで部分点を稼いだ。世界史は、論述問題を3問すべて回答することができた。

運命の合格発表がきた・・・結果は・・・

早稲田大学政治経済学部　不合格
一橋大学経済学部　合格

ゆかりは、大喜びで受験を終えた。まさか、中学レベルからやり直した自分が、東大京大の次に難しいとされる一橋大学に合格できるなんて夢にも思っていなかった！

銀座のホステス仲間も、お客さんも、みんなが祝福してくれた。

ゆかりは、今までの人生で最高の気分を味わっていた・・・。

ゆかりは、今までに銀座のクラブで貯蓄したお金で大学に通った。今までの派手な生活は捨てて、いちから大学生としてやり直すと心に決めていた。大学では、学業とともにインターンシップも努力して、インターンシップ先で出会った東大の学生と交際することにした。

ゆかりは一橋大学を優等で卒業し、外資系の投資銀行に就職した。 彼女は自分が達成したことを誇りに思っていた。

「いつ、努力を始めるかなんて、関係ないわ・・・思い立ったときが努力を始める最初の日なのよ・・・今後も、MBAや公認会計士試験など、色々なことに挑戦するわ」

Yukari, a 20-year-old woman who works as a hostess in Ginza, had no interest in economics or business. She was 168 cm tall, slender and had a good appearance. She enjoyed her glamorous lifestyle that came with her job and her nightly conversations with wealthy men. But over time, she began to feel her emptiness and lack of direction in her life.

"I'm also flattered when I'm young, but when I'm over 30, I have to do something different..."

While chatting with an elite successful brokerage firm one evening, she was intrigued by his insights on the stock market and the global economy. She asked him more questions, listened intently to his answers, and wanted to know more. Over the next few weeks, she began reading books and articles on economics and business.

Her familiar interest in economics soon turned into her passion. She wanted to learn more, so she decided to pursue a degree in economics from Hitotsubashi University. She felt that the University of Tokyo was impossible, and she thought that if she worked hard at Hitotsubashi University or Keio University, she might be able to pass. She knew it would be a difficult road, but she was determined to persevere.

"English and mathematics are important for the Faculty of Economics at Hitotsubashi University. I also have to work hard on world history."

She led a harsh life, serving customers at night and studying for exams during the day. Some days she slept three hours. Starting at the junior high school level, she gradually learned English words, mathematical formulas, and world history terms.

She spent long hours studying in cafes and libraries, sacrificing her leisure time to achieve her goals.

Finally, it's time to take the exam. The first is Keio's Faculty of Economics.

In English, she felt that she should have gotten a passing score in both reading comprehension and English composition. Mathematics also completed the answer with almost no mistakes. The essay was difficult, but she decided not to worry about it because the points allotted were low.

Waseda University School of Political Science and Economics was in a very dark mood because she failed the common test. She answered the comprehensive questions in English and Japanese with a reasonable degree of perfection.

And then...the exam for Hitotsubashi University's Faculty of Economics came. Yukari was able to avoid being cut off by the score of the common test at the last minute. In English, she was good at reading long sentences, listening, and writing English essay. In mathematics, difficult questions were given, but partial points were earned by prioritizing basic problems and solving them. In world history, she was able to answer all three essay questions.

Yukari finished her exam with great joy. She never dreamed that she would be able to pass Hitotsubashi University, which is said to be the next most difficult university after the University of Tokyo, after starting over from junior high school!

Yukari was feeling her best ever in her life...

Yukari went to college with the money she'd saved from clubs in Ginza. She decided to throw away her flashy life and start over as a college student. At university, she worked hard on her internship as well as her studies, and she decided to associate with the University of Tokyo student she met at the internship.

Yukari graduated with honors from Hitotsubashi University and got a job at a foreign investment bank. She was proud of what she had achieved.

"It doesn't matter when you start working hard... The first day you start working hard is when you think of it... I will continue to challenge various things such as MBA and the CPA exam."
