📘本のタイトルになっている’explore’は’to search a place to discover and learn’という意味。4人の子供たちは飛行機事故のためアマゾンで生活をするはめに。本のタイトルのように、この未開の地で、今まで見たり聞いたりしたことのないことを発見し、困難に立ち向かっていく壮大な冒険物語。

ストーリー設定もユニークですが、本に書かれている事がとにかく興味深い！ずっと読み続けてしまっていました！家、狩り用の道具、イカダの作り方、タランチュラの味、魚の捕まえ方、命を脅かすほどの幼虫や蟻、ピンクのイルカとのコミュニケーションの取り方などなど…ファンタジーっぽく聞こえてしまうかもしれないけど、Katherine Rundellさんの詳細な描写や表現の力のおかげで、子どもが世界観に浸れるようなリアリティのある冒険物語だったなと思いました。
児童文学の醍醐味は、子供たちが物語を読み進める中で、自分と主人公を置き換えて「自分だったらどうするだろう？」といろんなことを感じたり、考えたり、決断したり、困難に立ち向かい、成長する経験ができることだと思います。’The Explorer’はまさに子どもの心を大きく動かすような１冊だと思いました。

Utterly adventurous story full of lessons of life!
The story about four children who were stranded in Amazon after the airplane crash, can take you to the magnificent journey to discover surprises of lives in Amazon and make you feel more courageous.

I love the uniqueness of the story setting: the Amazon and the contents such as the taste of tarantula, life skills (making a den, spear and raft), how to catch fish with a spear, the life-threatening danger of maggots and bullets ants, the communication with pink, grey dolphins… They all sound fantasy, but when they were written by Katherine, they all sound very realistic and it was difficult to put this book down! Also, I loved the way how the story ended! The magic of the children’s literature is that the children can experience the story as a main character, encounter many challenges and opportunities to make decisions so it gives them courage and lift their spirit up after reading, which ’The Explorer’ must have done!
