The other day, I read one of the articles by Akira-san on the blog site 'note'. It says that almost no one can use a foreign language better than their mother tongue. He says that in the case of the Japanese, almost no one can use a foreign language better than the Japanese language. So, he concludes that the Japanese need to improve their Japanese skills in order to enhance their skills in a foreign language such as English. I agree with him.
I have used Japanese as my mother tongue while improving English, a foreign language. As for Japanese, I have never seriously studied it in my life. I have never studied Japanese grammar since I was in junior high school. Nor did I have any interest in Japanese lessons at school. Nevertheless, I have managed to use it without any problems. I have never met a Japanese person who did not understand what I said or wrote in Japanese. It is because I have unconsciously improved my Japanese skills in my everyday life in Japan. The more I have used them, the better I have been able to use them. In other words, I have used them so often that I do not have to bother studying the skills.
On the other hand, I have spent a lot of time enhancing my English skills, especially reading and writing. And in my mind, my English skills have improved gradually. I also had the chance to move to Europe and to use English in my daily life. At that time, I had no choice but to use English in business because none of my European customers spoke Japanese. So, it was certain that my English improved significantly at that time. As a result, I sometimes slept talking in English and could take notes in English at business meetings with my customers.
However, I have never thought that one day, I would be able to use English better than my mother tongue, Japanese. On the contrary, I have sometimes feared that the more I used English, the more I might lose my Japanese skills. So, when I was in Europe, I used to devour Japanese books and newspapers at home. I was very afraid of losing my Japanese skills.

　先日、「note」でアキラさんの記事のひとつを読みました。その記事は、「外国語を母語より上手に使える人はほとんどいない」というものでした。「日本人であれば、日本語より外国語を上手に使える人はほとんどいないから、日本人は英語等の外国語の上達のためには、日本語の能力を高める必要がある」というのが彼の結論でした。この意見には同感です。
　ボクの場合、日本語が母語で、外国語の英語の上達をめざしてきました。日本語については、これまで真剣に勉強したことはなかったです。中学生以来、日本語の文法を勉強したこともありません。また、学校の国語の授業にはまったく興味がなかったです。それでも、日本語は問題なく使えるようになりました。ボクが日本語で言ったこと、書いたことを理解できない日本人はいません。それは、国内の日常生活の中で、無意識のうちに日本語が上達してきたからです。日本語を使えば使うほど、上手に使えるようになったのです。つまり、わざわざ勉強する必要がないほど頻繁に使っていたのです。
　その一方で、英語力、特にリーディングとライティングの強化に多くの時間を費やしてきました。そしてボクの中では、英語力は徐々に向上してきたと思っています。また、ヨーロッパに赴任して、日常生活で英語を使う機会も得ました。当時、ヨーロッパのお客さんで日本語を話す人は皆無だったので、仕事で英語を使わざるを得なかったのです。だから、英語力はかなり向上していることを実感していました。その結果、英語で寝言をいうこともあったし、お客さんとの商談では英語でメモを取ることもできるようになりました。
　とはいえ、母語である日本語よりも英語がうまく使えるようになる日が来るなんて考えたこともありませんでした。それどころか、英語を使えば使うほど日本語が鈍るのではないかと心配になることもありました。そのため、欧州いたころは、日本語が鈍るのが不安で、家では日本語の本や新聞を貪るように読みました。
