It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above

ある海辺の王国に
乙女がひとり暮らしていた
その名はアナベル・リー
その乙女、思いはただ
ひたすら、ぼくを愛し、ぼくに愛されることだった

この海辺の王国で、ぼくと彼女は
子供のように、子供のまま生きていた
愛も、ただの愛ではなく愛を超えて愛した──
ぼくとぼくのアナベル・リー
ふたりの愛は、天国にいる天使たちに
羨まれ、憎まれてしまった

それがため、遠いむかし
その海辺の王国に
寒い夜風が吹きつのり
ぼくのアナベル・リーを凍えさせた
高貴な生まれの彼女の親戚たちが
突然現れて彼女を、ぼくから引き裂き、連れ去った
そして閉じ込めてしまった
海辺の王国の墓所に

天使たちは天国にいてさえ
僕たち程に幸せではなかったから、彼女とぼくを羨んだのだ
そうだとも！　それが理由だ、と（海辺の王国の人たちは
みんな知っている）
ある夜、雲から風が吹きおりて
凍えさせ、殺してしまった、ぼくのアナベル・リー

しかしぼくらの愛、それはとても強いのだ
ぼくらより年上の人たちの愛よりも
ぼくらより賢い人たちの愛よりも──
だから天上の天使たちも
海の底の悪魔たちも
裂くことはできない、ぼくの魂と
あの美しいアナベル・リーの魂を

なぜなら、月の光の差すごとにぼくは

・エドガー・アラン・ポー（Edger Allan Poe, 1809-1849）
ボストン生まれ。18歳で処女詩集『タマレーン　その他（Tamerlane and Other Poems, 1827）』を出版。『アナベル・リー』は死の２日後の10月９日に「ニューヨーク・トリビューン」誌に掲載される。詩では『大鴉（The Raven, 1845）』、小説では『アッシャー家の崩壊（The Fall of the House of Usher, 1839）』『黒猫（The Black Cat, 1843）』などが代表作として挙げられる。

・19世紀は近代的なアメリカ社会の基本要因が出揃う。
領土拡大（1823年　モンロー宣言）
産業革命の胎動（1812年　米英戦争→ヨーロッパからの工業製品の輸入が途絶え、国内の工業製品に対する需要が高まる）
デモクラシーの本格的実現（白人男性普通選挙法の拡大）
→それまでの英国的基準に対する奴隷の反動として、一種の地方主義が台頭。ナショナリズムの高揚。
→未だヨーロッパからの影響は拭えないものの、「アメリカらしさ」の追求が始まる。

・ロマン主義：18世紀末～19世紀中頃流行。特に1830年頃から南北戦争の文化を「アメリカン・ルネサンス」と呼ぶ。

・超絶主義：19世紀初頭に台頭。エマソン（Ralph Waldo Emason, 1803-1882）を中心として始まるロマン主義運動。有限な存在のうちに神的なものの内在を認める。Self-Reliance（独立自存）を唱える。
ポーは超絶主義と対立する立場を取っている。彼の詩は1870年頃からフランス、ベルギーを中心に興る象徴主義に影響を与える。
