先日、秋葉原無差別殺傷事件の犯人の死刑が執行されたと、ニュースを見ました。2008年に事件が起きてから14年の月日が経ちました。当時は事件の重大さに驚いたものの、死刑執行のニュースをみて、時が過ぎるのは早いなと同時に実感しました。
その時に、Twitterで東京のイギリス大使館が公式に、イギリスはいかなる状況でも死刑には反対していると公式に投稿していました。
そんなことから死刑制度について英語で考えてみました。

世界の死刑制度

日本で生まれ育った私には、生まれた頃から死刑制度があリました。そのため死刑制度があることがごく当たり前のように認識していました。しかし、世界の死刑制度を調べてみると、死刑制度を取り入れている国の方が少ないことがわかりました。
また先進国の中では、日本とアメリカだけが死刑制度を採用しています。アメリカは州によって法律が違いますが、50州のうち24州が死刑制度を採用しています。

Should the death penalty be banned in Japan?

I disagree with the idea that the death penalty should be banned in Japan. Nowadays, most nations have abolished the death penalty due to its breaches of human rights. Also, It is controversial in several countries and states because of their political ideology or culture. However, in my view, there are positive effects of applying the death penalty. These are the reasons why I disagree.

Firstly, people understand how important their lives are by using capital punishment. For example, they will be punished by death if they kill someone. Generally speaking, most people don’t want to have their lives ended by other humans. Therefore, it will deter serious crimes.

Secondly, without the death penalty, if innocent people are killed by criminals, the family of those victims will not be able to retribute punishment just like the criminals have done. So the death penalty is a legal tool for them to heal their grief.

Lastly, I think that the death penalty is a cost-effective solution. For example, it costs more for prisoners to serve a life sentence than to be committed to death. People don't want their taxes to be spent on prisoners' welfare.

In conclusion, for all of the above reasons, I disagree that the idea that the death penalty should be banned in Japan. Nevertheless, careful legal steps should be taken to avoid misjudgments.

まとめ

死刑制度には多くの賛成意見と反対意見がありますし、国の政治や文化の違いで、死刑制度に対する価値観も変わってきます。国際交流が好きな私にとって、お互いの国の価値観を理解していくことはとても重要だと気付かされました。
