【Day1】 Welcome! What are YOU going to do this week?

いよいよ迎えたサマースクール初日。

今日まで着々と準備を進めてきた大学生メンター（以下、メンター）はワクワクしながら笑顔で高校生を迎え入れました。テーマソングとともにハウス（※１）毎に高校生を全力で歓迎し、非常に賑やかな雰囲気でした。

「開会式」に集まった高校生は、未知の世界に足を踏み入れる期待感で溢れた表情でした。コロナ明けで4年ぶりの完全対面開催となった今年は「バルーンリリース」も復活し、各々SSへの期待感、興奮、不安など渦巻く想いを風船に吹き込み、飛ばすセレモニーを行うことができました。

最初は緊張していた様子の高校生も、「アイスブレイク」のアクティビティを通してお互いのことを知り、少しずつ笑顔が増え表情が柔らかくなったようです。アイスブレイク内での「パズルワーク」では高校生主体で議論を深め、チームビルディングに繋げる良い機会となりました。
移動中や隙間時間でさらに打ち解けた高校生とメンターは、宿泊施設に着くと施設使用についての説明を受けました。

荷解きと休憩を挟み行われたのは、歓迎の場である「Welcome Dinner」。HLABサマースクールの特徴の一つであるハウス制度にそって、高校生は割り振られたグループのメンターと高校生と食事をしました。少人数でアットホームな雰囲気のハウス、みんな自然と会話が弾みます。

「出逢おう、メンターの○○に」では、高校生各自が主体的に大学生に話を聞きに行っていました。大学生の話を聞く高校生は目を輝かせており、時間内で収まらないほどの盛り上がりを見せていました。明日以降の高校生と大学生との関わり方にも注目ですね。

その後は、第1回目のリフレクション（※２）。手探りではありましたが、高校生は互いの考えを共有する場に対して前向きに取り組んでいました。

初日で得られた学びを踏まえ次の日の目標を立てた高校生、明日がまた素敵な1日になりますように！

The first day of summer school has finally started.

The mentors, who had been steadily preparing for the day, excitedly welcomed the high school students with smiles on their faces. The students gathered for the "Opening Ceremony," their eyes shining with anticipation of stepping into the unknown. At first, the students looked nervous, but as they got to know each other through the "Ice Break" activities, they gradually began to smile and their expressions softened. The students and their mentors, who had become more comfortable with each other during transportation and spare time between activities, were briefed on the use of the facilities once they arrived at their accommodations. After unpacking and a break, a "Welcome Dinner" was held, where the students dined with their assigned group of mentors and high school students in accordance with the House System (*1) - one of the key features of the HLAB Summer School - . The small number of students and the homey atmosphere of the Houses made for a natural conversation. This was followed by the first round of reflection (*2). Although it was a hands-on experience, the students were positive about the opportunity to share their thoughts with each other. Based on the first day's reflections, the high school students set goals for the next day; we wish them a wonderful day tomorrow!

【Day2】 Dive into the unknown

初日の盛り上がり冷めやまぬなか迎えた２日目。今日から本格的に企画がスタートします。

熱中症対策の観点から当初の予定を変更し、午前中に「Discover Tokyo」を実施しました。ハウスごとに東京都内を散策し、大都市のダイナミックさを味わいました。ハウスのメンバーで浅草や原宿などの東京の観光地に行き、ハウスの仲も深まったようです。

午後のプログラムは、海外大生メンターによる英語での専攻分野に関する講義「セミナー」からはじまりました。
HLABのセミナーは、少人数制のクラスによるアカデミックセッションで、高校生が多種多様な学問分野を掘り下げる貴重な機会です。内容が大学レベルであるのみならず、英語で全て構成されているため、高校生は戸惑う場面もありましたが、新しい挑戦に胸を躍らせているようでした。また、日本人メンターが海外大生メンターへの質問を促すなど高校生のサポートに入り、高校生の不安は解消されたようです。

また、企画の合間には、高校生が自主的に気になる大学生メンターや海外メンターと話している姿も見られ、自分の興味を広げ、深めていっている様子が見られました。

2日目の最後の企画として、社会人と自由に交流することができるフリーインタラクションを実施しました。社会でご活躍されている社会人の方々と楽しそうに、目をキラキラさせながら話している高校生の姿が印象的でした。社会人の方々とのお話を通して進路や今悩んでいることなどに関する深い対話をしている姿も見られました。

サマースクールにも徐々に慣れ、DAY1から高校生の雰囲気も大きく変わったように感じられます。明日からの更なる変化が楽しみです！

The excitement of the first day has not yet cooled off, but the second day has arrived. Today, the program began in earnest.

In the morning, each group explored Tokyo in "Discover Tokyo" to experience the dynamic of a big city. House members went to Asakusa, Harajuku, and other Tokyo sightseeing spots, and the House members seemed to have deepened their friendship.

In the afternoon, the group began with a "seminar," a lecture in English by Global side mentors on their major field of study. HLAB seminars are academic sessions in small classes and are a valuable opportunity for high school students to delve into a wide variety of academic disciplines. Not only is the content at the university level, but it is conducted entirely in English, so the high school students were at times confused, but they were excited about the new challenges they were facing. In addition, Japanese mentors supported the high school students by encouraging them to ask questions to the Global side mentors, which seemed to ease their anxiety.

The last event of the second day was a "free interaction" session, where participants could freely interact with working professionals. It was impressive to see the high school students enjoying talking with working people who are actually active in society with a twinkle in their eyes.

The program has begun in earnest, and the atmosphere seems to have changed dramatically since DAY 1. We are looking forward to seeing further changes in the high school students from tomorrow!

【Day3】 Face yourself

共同生活に少しずつ慣れてきた3日目。
今日は自分について思考を巡らせる企画が多い1日になりました。

セミナー2日目となる今日は、前日の反省を活かして積極的に質問をしている高校生が増えたように見受けられました。自身の行動を整理し共有した上で、客観視するリフレクションの影響が大きいのではないでしょうか。引き続き高校生の変化から目が離せません。

午後にはMIRAI LAB PALETEに移動し、2つのワークを行いました。まず「偏愛マップ」を行いました。自身の関心や趣味、好きなものについて整理し言語化して伝えることで、自らの価値観について整理する機会となりました。高校生が描く「偏愛マップ」は、それぞれの個性が溢れていました。共通の趣味を見つけて盛り上がるような微笑ましい一面も垣間見えました。

続いて行われた「社会×自己分析」では、自分のバックグラウンドを社会課題と結びつけることがメインテーマとなりました。
まず、ライフラインチャートを用いて自分の人生の移り変わりをグラフで可視化しました。その後、ハウスごとにペアで互いにインタビューを行うことでお互いの価値観の違いや自分の軸について知ることができました。

MIRAI LAB PALETEで行われた本日最後の企画は社会人の方々とのフリーインタラクションでした。会場が大手町ということもあり、社会でご活躍されている多くの社会人の方がお越しになられました。サマースクールが始まって2回目の社会人の方々との交流だったため、以前よりも活発な質問が高校生から飛び交っていました。

また、休憩時間にはメンターと高校生が活発に話している姿が見受けられました。
毎晩行われているリフレクションでは、今日行われた様々なワークを通して気づいた自身の価値観をアウトプットする場となったようです。
各ハウスで思い思いの時間を過ごしながら、折り返し地点となるDay4に向けてそれぞれの目標を立てていました。

Gradually getting used to the community life, it marks the third day of the HLAB summer school Tokyo. Today was full of activities that made students think about themselves and their values.

As the second day of the seminar, more high school students seemed to be actively asking questions based on their reflections from the previous day. This may have been largely due to the reflection session, in which the students were able to organize and share their own actions objectively. We will continue to keep an eye on the changes among the students!

In the afternoon, we moved to MIRAI LAB PALETE for two work sessions. First, we conducted a "partiality map. This was an opportunity for the students to organize and verbalize their interests, hobbies, and favorite things, and to organize their own values. The maps drawn by the high school students were full of their individuality. There were also glimpses of a smiley side to them as they found common hobbies and got excited about them.

In the "Society x Self-Analysis" session that followed, the main theme was to connect one's background with social issues. First, participants visualized their life transitions on a graph using a lifeline chart.

The last project of the day at MIRAI LAB PALETE was a “free interaction” with a people have great role in society. Since the venue was Otemachi, many working people who are active in the business world came to the event. Moreover, this was the second time since the summer school started, the high school students asked many more questions than before. Also, during breaks, the mentors and high school students were seen talking actively with each other.

The nightly reflection session seemed to be an opportunity for the students to output their own values that they had realized through the various works conducted today. While spending their own time in each house, the students seemed to be setting their own goals for Day 4, which is the turnaround point of the program.

【Day4】 Have fun learning!

HLAB サマースクールの折り返し地点となる4日目の今日は、終わりが近づく寂しさを忘れるほど企画が盛りだくさんな1日でした。

午前中には、普段のセミナーとは少し違い、海外大生メンターが自分の得意なこと、してもらいたいことをブースに分かれて発表する「GBs Inspo Booth」が行われました。高校生は興味のある海外大生メンターに話を聞くためブースを自由にまわり積極的な姿勢を見せてくれました。

昼食後に行われた「日本文化でおたのしみ」では、浅草右近屋の方々をお招きし、盆踊りを通して身体を使いながら日本の伝統文化を学びました。ここでは普段より更に高校生が海外大生メンターに積極的に言語の壁を超えてコミュニケーションをとる姿が見らえました。HLABのリベラルアーツ教育の柱である相互的に学び合う”ピアメンターシップ”が垣間見える瞬間でした！

続く、HLAB理事の横山匡様によるワークショップでは、自分の経験から大切にしている価値観を見出す自己分析を実施しました。10分間でお互いの強みや弱みなどを聞くインタビューワーク後、グループ内での他己紹介を行いました。高校生が自分を深く見つめ、客観的な視点から自分を知ることで仲間と深い対話をする貴重な時間となりました。

また、夕食時には、「ホームカミングディナー」というHLABサマースクール過去参加者と交流する食事会が行われました。高校生は、サマースクール過去参加者との交流を通じ、より仲間との繋がりを実感し、未来にワクワクしていた様子でした。数年後にまたみんなで集まるのが楽しみですね！

Today, the fourth day of the HLAB Summer School, the turnaround day of the HLAB Summer School, was a day full of planning that it was easy to forget the sadness of the approaching end.

In the morning, the GBs Inspo Booth was held, which was a little different from the usual seminar, where overseas mentors divided into booths to present what they are good at and what they would like to see them do. The high school students showed a proactive attitude by freely visiting the booths to talk to the overseas mentors they were interested in.

After lunch, the students learned about traditional Japanese culture through the Bon Odori dance. The students were able to communicate more actively with their overseas mentors than they normally do, transcending language barriers. It was a glimpse of the "peer mentorship" that is a pillar of HLAB's liberal arts education!

In the following workshop with HLAB director Tadashi Yokoyama, a self-analysis was conducted to identify important values from their own experiences. 10 minutes of interview work to listen to each other's strengths and weaknesses was followed by self-introductions within the group. This was a valuable time for high school students to look deeply into themselves and engage in deep dialogue with their peers by getting to know themselves from an objective perspective.

The 'homecoming dinner' was also held at dinner time, where the students could interact with past participants of the HLAB Summer School. The high school students seemed to feel more connected to their peers and excited about the future as a result of their involvement with Alumni. We look forward to getting together again in a few years' time!

【Day5】 Discover as much as you can

サマースクールも後半にさしかかった5日目は、お互いの新たな一面を知る機会となりました。

海外大生メンターによるセミナーも3日目となり、今まで英語で話すことに抵抗感があった高校生も、積極的に発言するようになりました。

そして様々な分野の最前線で活躍されている有識者の方をお招きし、ご講演いただく「フォーラム」、そして「タレントショー」を行いました。

「フォーラム」1日目のゲストはNPO法人 WELgee代表の渡部カンコロンゴ清花様でした。高校生へのメッセージを交えながらお話をしていただき、普段はあまり関わることのない社会人の方の貴重なお話を聞くことができた良い機会だったのではないでしょうか。高校生の頃から少しでも興味を持ったことには好奇心を持って活動しているその行動力や、難民支援への熱い想いに高校生は刺激を受けていました。また、このフォーラムが自分の将来を見つめ直すきっかけとなりました。

「タレントショー」では、ここまで数日間を共にしてきた高校生・大学生メンターが一同に会し、思い思いの発表を行いました。海外大生メンターと高校生による歌のコラボや、ダンス、落語、マジックショーなどが行われました。最後は全員で歌を歌い、出演した高校生だけでなく、この5日間共に過ごしてきた仲間の姿を見た高校生らにとっても、深い感動と刺激があるプログラムになったことと思います。

自分自身を表現することで、また新たな発見ができたのではないでしょうか。彼らの明日からの成長が楽しみです。

The fifth day, which came in the half of the summer school, was an opportunity for the students to get to know each other's new aspects.
This was the third day of the seminar by students from overseas universities, and high school students who had previously been reluctant to speak in English began to speak more actively.

Also, we had a 'Forum', which we invite an expert who is at the forefront of various field to have the lecture, and 'Talent Show' today.

The guest speaker of the first 'Forum' was Ms. Sayaka Kankolongo Watanabe, representative of NPO WELgee. She gave not only a speech about her career or field but also personal message to students. The high school students were inspired by her energy and her passion for supporting refugees, as well as her ability to take action with curiosity in anything that interests her since she was a high school student. We believe that this forum provided an opportunity for the high school students  to reconsider their future.

In the 'Talent Show', students and mentors who had spent the same time in the past few days, presented themselves to the audience. There were various type of performance including a singing collaboration between global side mentors and high school students, rakugo, a magic show and so on. The program was deeply moving and stimulating not only for the high school students who participated in as a performer, but also for the high school students who saw their friends who had spent the past five days together.

Expressing their own personal thoughts and feelings may have helped them to make new discoveries.

【Day6】 Show us what you've got!

6日目は、今までとは少し違い、高校生が英語で自分が幸せだと感じる瞬間について発表し、周りの高校生や海外大生と深掘りする「Joy Exchange」、HLAB創設者である小林亮介さん、そして2011年HLABサマースクール初年度参加者の山根さまによる「HLABセッション」、昨日に引き続き2日目となる「フォーラム」。そして高校生がHLABの運営メンバーになりきって、リユニオンの企画提案を行う「アイデアソン」を行いました。
高校生もだんだん表情が柔らかくなり打ち解けてきた様子です。

「Joy Exchange」での、海外大生メンターとの交流は、最初は少し緊張していた高校生もいましたが、幸せである瞬間を考え共有することで、また新たな一面が見えてきたのではないのでしょうか。

HLABの創設者でもある小林亮介さん、そしてHLABサマースクールの2011年参加者である山根さまをお招きし、お話を伺いました。
HLABについて知りながら、山根さまの専門分野についてお話を伺い、サマースクールが終わった後の自身についても考える時間となりました。

「アイデアソン」では論理的思考を用い、HLABサマースクールの同窓会企画であるリユニオンについて想像力豊かなアイデアをたくさん出してくれました。
自分たちが考えたアイデアが実現することことを想像して行われ、グループごとの個性が溢れるプログラムになりました。時間制限のある中で、仲間と協働し、それぞれがチームの中でどのような役割を担えるか模索する高校生たちの様子も見られました。

また、今日が最終日となる社会人フリーインタラクションでは、初日と比較しますます積極性が増し、活き活きと社会人との交流を楽しむ高校生の姿が見受けられました。

サマースクールも残り2日、最後まで全員で駆け抜けましょう！

The programs were slightly different from the previous days: the 'Joy Exchange', in which high school students presented in English about the moments they felt happy and delved deeper with other high school students and global side mentors; the 'HLAB Session' by Mr. Ryosuke Kobayashi, a founder of HLAB, and Mr. Yamane, who was a participant of the first HLAB summer school in 2011; the 'Forum'; and the 'Ideathon', in which high school students pretended to be steering committee members and proposed plans for the reunion project.
The high school students' expressions gradually softened and they seemed to be getting to know each other.

Some of the high school students were a little nervous at first when interacting with the global side mentors at the 'Joy Exchange', but they were able to see a new aspect of themselves by thinking about and sharing moments of happiness.

We invited Mr. Ryosuke Kobayashi, founder of HLAB, and Mr. Yamane, HLAB 2011 participant, to speak with us. We learned about the history of HLAB, heard about Mr. Yamane's area of expertise, and had time to think about ourselves after the summer school.

In the 'Ideathon', high school students used logical thinking and came up with many imaginative ideas for the HLAB alumni reunion project.
They imagined that the ideas they came up with would actually take place at the Reunion, which made the program unique to each group. Although the time was limited, the high school students were seen collaborating with their peers and exploring what role each of them could play in the team.

Also, in the last 'free interaction', we could see a more lively attitude from the high school students compared to the first day.

With only two days left of the summer school, let's all run through it together until the end!

【Day7】 Seize every opportunity

残り2日となった今日は、最後のセミナーを行いました。初日のセミナーから大きく成長し、高校生たちが興味を持った点について積極的に質問している姿が見受けられました。

その後、HLABが運営する教育寮のSHIMOKITA COLLEGEに移動し、「未来系ワークショップ」を行いました。ここでは、サマースクールでの学びや経験を自分の日常や将来にどう活かせるかを考えました。ハウス内でペアワークを行い、実際に言葉にすることでより実現に近づく第一歩となったのではないでしょうか。

また、大学生が専門分野をブース形式で発表する「Academic Fair」では、これまで交流をしてきた大学生メンターが大学で学んでいる内容について触れる機会となりました。高校生が自由にメンターに話を聞きに行くことで、知らなかった学問に触れる機会となり「選択肢が広がった」、「興味分野に気づくことができた」など、刺激のある時間になりました。

サマースクール最後の晩餐は、「フェアウェルディナー」を行いました。ドレスアップして写真を撮ったり、まだ話せていなかった高校生や大学生と改めて話したり、ここまで7日間のサマースクールを振り返りながら有意義な時間を過ごせました。
SHIMOKITA COLLEGEに住むカレッジ生たちとの交流からも学びを得ました。

そして最後のリフレクションの時間。サマースクールで感じた変化やこれからの選択について、信頼できるハウスの仲間たちと語り合いました。
最終夜は時間の許す限り多くの人と交流し、意欲的に様々な経験を吸収する高校生の姿がとても印象的でした。

明日はついに最終日となります、高校生はどのような思い出閉会式に挑むのでしょうか。

On the seventh day, the final seminar was held. Unlike the seminar on the first day, the high school students were seen actively asking questions on points of interest.

The students then moved to SHIMOKITA COLLEGE, a residential college run by HLAB, for the 'Vision Workshop'. Students considered how they could utilize what they learned and experienced during the summer school to their everyday lives and future. By working in pairs in the House and actually putting it into words, this was the first step towards realising it.

The 'Academic Fair', where university students presented their specialisations in the form of booths, provided an opportunity for the student to get to know what the mentors, with whom they have built up a rapport, are studying at university. Since high school students could ask about their fields of interest without hesitation, the fair provided an opportunity for them to come into contact with studies they had not known about, and we feel that it was a stimulating time for them, as they were able to "broaden their options" and "become aware of their fields of interest".

The final dinner of the summer school was a 'farewell dinner' where the students reflected on the summer school period. We were able to spend a meaningful time talking again with high school students and university students with whom we had not yet had a chance to talk.
Students also learned from interactions with the residents of SHIMOKITA COLLEGE.

Then came the final reflection time. We discussed the changes we felt during the summer school and the choices we will make in the future with our trusted peers.
On the final night, the high school students interacted with as many people as time allowed, and it was very impressive to see them so eagerly absorbing a variety of experiences.

Tomorrow will finally be the last day of the summer school.
What memories will the high school students take to the closing ceremony?

【Day8】 Ready, set, go!

ついに迎えた最終日。

午前中は宿泊施設でハウスごとに「お手紙企画」を行いました。未来の自分へ手紙を書き、今の気持ちを赤裸々に述べることによって、思いを昇華させる機会となりました。

その後の、移動時間ではサマースクール中最後のメンターと高校生との対話が盛んに行われました。最後のチャンスを活かして、英語に苦手意識を持つ高校生が海外大生メンターと積極的に対話している場面が、印象的でした。

午後は政策研究大学院大学で、閉会式が行われました。メンターと高校生が互いに気持ちを伝え合う光景はサマースクールを通していかに関係性が深まったかを物語っています。高校生は、サマースクール前の目標と現在の姿も比較したことでこの8日間での成長を強く感じられたはずです。

その後、宣言タイムが、高校生が将来に向けての目標を全体に共有する場として設けられました。短期的な目標と長期的な目標とで分けて、整然と話す姿は特に印象的でした。

テーマソングが会場を包み込む中、修了証を受け取る高校生の表情は未来への希望に満ちていました。式終了後は至るところで熱い抱擁と対話が交わされ、過ぎていく時の儚さを感じました。
時の帰路に着く高校生の背中はとても頼もしく誇らしげでした。

HLAB TOKYO 2023にご参加頂きありがとうございました。皆さんがこのブログを読んでいる頃には、サマースクールも終了し日常生活に戻っている頃でしょう。サマースクールはあくまで「スタート」地点に過ぎません。一夏の思い出で終わらせるも、今後に活かすも皆さん次第です。そして、日常生活にSSの学びをどう活かせるかは人それぞれです。ぜひ自分に合った学びの活かし方を見つけてみてくださいね。

The last day finally arrived.

In the morning, each house held a "letter writing project" at the hostel. By writing letters to their future selves and stating their current feelings in an honest manner, the students had an opportunity to sublimate their thoughts and feelings.

During the travel time, the mentors and high school students had a lively dialogue for the last time during the summer school. It was impressive to see high school students, who were not good at English, taking advantage of this last chance to actively talk with their global side mentors.

In the afternoon, the closing ceremony was held at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. The scene of the mentors and high school students expressing their feelings to each other shows how much their relationship has deepened through the summer school. The high school students must have felt a strong sense of growth over the past eight days, as they also compared their goals before the summer school with their current state.

Declaration time was then set aside for high school students to share their goals for the future with the entire group. It was particularly impressive that students spoke about their short-term and long-term goals clearly and briskly.

As the theme song filled the hall, the expressions on the faces of the high school students as they received their certificates were full of hope for the future. After the ceremony, big hugs and conversations were exchanged everywhere, reminding us of the fleeting nature of the passing time. The high school students were so encouraging and proud as they headed home at the end of the ceremony.

By the time you are reading this blog, the summer school will have ended and you will have returned to your daily lives.
It is up to you to decide whether you want to end it as a memory of one summer or make the most of it in the future. It is up to each of you to decide how you will apply what you have learned in the summer school to your daily life.
