【Day1】 誘う

本日よりついにHLAB GUNMA 2023が開幕しました。

群馬県での開催はオンラインを含め3年目となります。今年は初の完全対面開催となり、夏に向けて大学生が一丸となって準備をしてきました。

晴れ晴れしい初日のはずが土砂降りの幕開けとなってしまいましたが、少し緊張した面持ちで高崎市へと足を運んだ77人の高校生。

ついに1週間のサマースクールが始まりました。

初日は高崎市総合福祉センター たまごホールにて参加者である高校生と国内外の大学生、総勢120人が一同に会し、開会式を行いました。式には群馬県知事戦略部長の古仙様にお越しいただき、ご挨拶をいただきました。また、群馬サマースクールの委員長である有賀春桜美、海外大生代表のJames Toliver、高校生代表によるスピーチも行われました。スピーチでは群馬のスローガンである「Ignite your life, make it yours」をもとに、サマースクールに対する各々の思いを伝えました。終盤には大学生メンターが作成したオープニングムービーを観賞し、高校生はこれからの1週間に対する期待を膨らませていました。

開会式後はサマースクールの主な舞台となる宿泊施設に移動しました。到着後はオリエンテーションやウェルカムディナーなどの企画が行われ、徐々にサマースクールが始まったことを実感できる時間となりました。夕食後には、参加者全員で館内を歩きまわりながら謎解きのアイスブレイクを行いました。謎解きを通して高校生と大学生が交流を深めることができ、これから寝食をともにする仲間を知る良い機会となりました。

1日目最後の企画は、サマースクールの醍醐味ともいえるリフレクション。ハウスと呼ばれる高校生、国内外の大学生が混ざったグループで今日感じたことやこれからの6日間にかける思いを語り合いました。
1日目を終えた高校生は「これからの期間で沢山刺激を受け、自分自身も成長したい」と強く意気込んでいました。

サマースクールはまだ始まったばかり。いよいよ明日からセミナーなど様々な企画が始まります。これからの1週間で高校生がどのように変わっていくのか楽しみです。

HLAB Summer School GUNMA 2023 started at Takasaki City. This is the third year that the event has been held in Gunma Prefecture, including online and this year was the first time to hold the event completely face-to-face, and the university students have been working together to prepare for the summer. What was supposed to be a sunny first day turned out to be a downpour, but the 77 high school students who made the trip to Takasaki City were a bit nervous. Finally, the week-long summer program began.

On the first day, the opening ceremony was held at the Takasaki City Welfare Center TAMAGO Hall, where a total of 120 high school students and university students from Japan and abroad gathered for the opening ceremony. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Furusen, Director of the Strategy Department of the Governor of Gunma Prefecture, who gave a speech. Further speeches were made by Suomi Aruga followed by James Toliver,  representing the Japan Side mentors and the Global Side mentors respectively, and lastly　representative of the high school participants. The speeches were based on Gunma's slogan, "Ignite your life, make it yours," and expressed their thoughts on the summer school. At the end of the speeches, the students watched the opening movie created by the summer school members and presented them with an idea of how the summer school will be.  

After the opening ceremony, the students moved to the hotel in the scenic Lake Haruna Onsen, where the summer school will be taking place. Upon arrival, an orientation and welcome dinner were organized, which instilled a sense of summer school into the participants.

After dinner, all participants walked around the hotel and had an ice breaker to solve a scavenger hunt; through solving the scavenger hunt, high school, and university students were able to connect, and it was a good opportunity to get to know the people whom they will be spending an entire week with. The last project was a reflection which is arguably the best part of the summer school.

After the first day, the high school students were very enthusiastic, with one claiming, "I want to be exposed to people from different backgrounds and grow as a person during the next six days.” Beginning tomorrow, seminars and various other activities will finally begin. We are looking forward to seeing how the high school students will develop their character through the serendipitous encounters with both high school and university students.

【Day2】 灯す

HLAB GUNMA 2023 2日目には、高校生たちを新たな学問の世界へと誘うプログラムが実施されました。午前中は、全4回にわたって、セミナーと呼ばれる海外大生が英語で行う授業が開講されます。全14個のセミナーの中から興味のあるものを選ぶことができ、実際にリベラルアーツを体験できる場となっています。

高校生にとって、教科の枠に捉われない大学の講義のようなテーマは新鮮だったようで、全て英語の授業に最初は戸惑っている様子でした。しかし、終盤になると自ら大学生メンターにわからないことを聞きにいく様子など、成長が見られました。セミナー後の昼食では「明後日はもっと発言したい」などの積極的な会話があちらこちらから聞こえ、これからのセミナーに期待が高まります。

午後には、群馬県出身のアーティストである小野澤 峻様をお招きし、名刺作りのアートワークショップを行いました。ワークショップのテーマは「貰ったら絶対に忘れることのない名札作り」です。高校生は小野澤様のプレゼンから「表現・素材・文字」の考え方を学び、自分自身を表す世界にひとつだけの名札を作りました。
色紙、段ボール、凧糸などの多種多様な画材・素材を使用し、各々の個性がよく現れたユニークな作品が誕生しました。互いに自分の作品を紹介している際に「人柄が出ていて素敵」「個性的で考え方がいいね」など、お互いを分析し褒め合う部分も見られ、サマースクールの目標の一つである「他人に寛容になる」が垣間見られた瞬間でした。

夕食後には現在多様な業界で活躍されている社会人の方々をお招きし、フリーインタラクションを行いました。世代を超え、高校生が主体的にコミュニケーションを生み出せるようになることが目標でしたが、私たちの予想を超えて語り合う姿が見られました。
活躍している社会人の方々と交流をすることで、社会に出ることへの抵抗感・消極的な気持ちが減り、キャリアを形成していくことへの熱が帯びていくのを感じました。

2日目のリフレクションでは、アートワークショップでの楽しさを語る高校生もいる反面、初日のセミナーで感じた不安を吐露する姿も多く見られました。ハウスメンターと語り合い、単語でも良いから英語で話していこうとポジティブに前を向く姿に、メンターも心を打たれました。

明日は、アップル元副社長で現日本通信取締役である福田尚久様にフォーラムにてご講演いただきます。普段は聞くことのできない貴重なお話に、高校生がどのような質問を投げかけるのか、明日のリフレクションが楽しみです。

On the second day of HLAB GUNMA 2023, a program was held to introduce high school students to a new academic world. In the morning across the week, a total of four classes called seminars are offered in English by students from universities abroad. Students can choose from a total of 14 seminars of their interest, providing an opportunity to experience the liberal arts in action.

For the high school students, the themes were like university lectures that are not bound by subject boundaries, and at first, they appeared to be confused by the classes, which were all in English. However, towards the end of the seminar, they showed signs of growth by asking mentors about things they didn't understand. At lunch after the seminar, active conversations such as "I want to speak up more in the next seminar" were heard from all over the place, and expectations for future seminars are high.

In the afternoon, Mr. Shun Onozawa, an artist from Gunma Prefecture, was invited to give an art workshop on making name cards. The theme of the workshop was "Making name cards that you will never forget when you receive them". The high school students learned the ideas of 'expression, materials and characters' from Mr. Onozawa's presentation and made one-of-a-kind name cards to represent themselves.
Using a wide variety of materials, such as colored paper, cardboard, and kite string, the students created unique works of art that showed their individuality. When introducing their work to each other, some of them analyzed and praised each other, saying things like "It's nice to see your personality come out" and "You have a unique personality and perspectives", which was a glimpse of one of the goals of the summer school, "Be tolerant of others".

After dinner, we guests specializing in different industries who are currently active in diverse industries for free interaction. The goal was to encourage high school students to proactively interact with the guests.
By interacting with the guests who work, the high schoolers can further their insight and grasp what they would potentially want to pursue.

During the second day's reflection, while some high school students talked about their enjoyment of the art workshop, it was also common to see them expressing the anxiety they felt during the first day's seminar. The mentors were heartened by the positive way they looked forward to talking with their house mentors and trying to speak in English, even if it was just a few words.

Tomorrow, Mr. Naohisa Fukuda, former vice-president of Apple and current director of Japan Communications, will speak at the forum. We are looking forward to tomorrow's reflection to see what questions the high school students will ask in this valuable talk that they would not usually be able to hear.

【Day3】 興す

3日目を迎えました。本日は朝から榛名文化会館に移動し、日本通信取締役社長、元Apple本社副社長の福田尚久さまから、Apple本社での経験やご自身の信条などについてご講演をしていただきました。お話の最後には、高校生に向けて「自分に自信を持てないのは当たり前だが、自分がこうだ、と思っていることには自信過剰であれ」という熱いメッセージをいただきました。

高校生からは、時間が足りないほどたくさんの質問があがり、福田さまからも高校生の質問に対して真摯にお答えいただきました。ご講演を聞いた高校生からは「福田さんのお話を聞いて、自分がビジネスに興味があるということに気がついた」、「自分が熱い思いを持っていれば、その思いは周りに伝わる、というお話が印象に残った」という声が聞かれ、ご講演から多くの学びを得られたようでした。

午後は宿泊施設に戻り、アイディアソンを行いました。アイディアソンは、「若者の政治への関心について」や「日本の教育においてグローバル人材を育成するには」といったテーマに基づいて色々なアイディアを出していき、最終的にはチームで一つのアイデアをまとめ、他のチームに自分たちのチームのアイディアを発表するという企画です。

自分の軸を見つけたり、自分の思いを言葉にしたりすることを目標に、様々な意見が飛び交った、非常に活発な時間でした。企画の最後には、チームのアイデアを他のチームに発表し、お互いの熱い思いを共有しました。終了後には高校生から「学校の友達とは話さないようなテーマについて、意見を言い合えたのが楽しかった」という声を聞くことができました。

その後は海外大学生による企画を行いました。海外大学生の一人一人が自分についてや、自分の出身地などについて写真を見せながら紹介しました。夕食後にはオフィスアワーを行いました。オフィスアワーでは、高校生が国内・大学生メンターの両方とじっくりと会話する機会を持つことができました。高校生と大学生が和気藹々と、時には真剣にお互いの話を聞き合う姿が見られました。

Today marks Day 3 of summer school. The morning started with the participants traveling to the Haruna Cultural Hall, where Mr. Naohisa Fukuda, President of Japan Communications Inc. and former Vice President of Apple HQ, gave a lecture on both his experiences at Apple HQ and his philosophy. At the end of his talk, he gave a passionate message to the high school students, saying, "It is natural to lack self-confidence, but be steadfast in your beliefs.”

The high school students asked so many questions that there was not enough time to answer them all, and Mr. Fukuda answered their questions sincerely. One high school student who listened to Mr. Fukuda's lecture said, "After listening to his talk, I realized that I am interested in business," and another stated, "I was impressed by his words that if you have passionate thoughts and feelings, they will be conveyed to those around you.”

In the afternoon, the participants returned to their accommodations for the Idea-thon. In the Idea-thon, students came up with a variety of ideas based on themes such as "political involvement amongst youth in Japan" and "how to develop global human resources in Japanese education." The students debated the topics passionately, to reach a single conclusion as a team and then find a way to effectively communicate that position to others. At the end of the project, each team gave a short presentation, sharing both their ideas and passion with the other teams. After the event, high school students shared that they enjoyed being able to engage with topics that they would not discuss with their school friends.

Afterward, overseas university students conducted a self-introduction session. Each student introduced their hometown by showing pictures.

Finally, after dinner, students participated in Office Hours, where they had the opportunity to have an in-depth conversation with both the Japanese and international university student mentors. The high school and university students could be seen sitting side-by-side, listening intently to each other's thoughts and feelings.

【Day4】 揺れる

HLAB GUNMA 2023は早いもので折り返し地点を通過しました。どんよりと曇っていた空がサマースクールが始まって以来の快晴となり、熱中症が警戒されるほどの暑さでした。早朝から大学生メンターと高校生が混ざりあって榛名湖の周りを散策をし、和気あいあいとフリーの交流時間を楽しんでいました。

今日最初のプログラムは地域連携企画のカッターボート。高校生と大学生メンターが同じボートに乗り、榛名湖と周りの山々の風景を楽しみました。声を合わせてボートを漕いでいるうちに、だんだんと一体感が生まれていきました。アクティビティ中は海外大学生メンターも一緒に声を合わせて楽しみ、より参加者同士の距離が近くなったように感じました。

また、3日間の様々なプログラムを通して沢山悩み、チャレンジの連続だった高校生にとっては良いリフレッシュの時間となり沢山の笑顔があふれていました。広い湖の真ん中から高校生と大学生の弾んだ声が群馬の大空に響きました。

昼食後はDAY2に引き続き海外大学生メンターが英語で授業を開講する、セミナーが行われました。体感型で学んだり、動画を視聴したりと海外大学生メンター各々の思いが詰まったセミナーが今日も行われていました。第1回よりもよりも踏み込んだ学問の内容となり、少し困惑したような顔も見受けられました。しかし、海外大学生メンターから少しでも多く学び取ろうとする高校生の顔は真剣そのものでした。

今日最後の企画は「自己分析企画」でした。大学生と高校生がペアとなり、自分自身の特性や人生の中での経験がどう自分を形作っているのかをインタビューワークを通して考える2時間となりました。
企画中は自分自身の過去の経験を見つめ直し、その時感じたことや得たことに対話をしながら思いを馳せていました。

明日でサマースクールも折り返し。
様々なことを吸収した高校生たちの顔は日に日に輝かしいものになっています。

HLAB GUNMA 2023 passed the turnaround point early. The overcast skies turned into clear skies for the first time since summer school began, and the heat was so intense that heat stroke was a real concern. From early in the morning, university students and high school students got together as they strolled around Lake Haruna and enjoyed a friendly, free time for socializing.

The first program of the day was a cutter boat ride, a local activity collaboration project. High school and university students enjoyed the scenery of Lake Haruna and the surrounding mountains from the boat. As they rowed the boat in unison, a sense of unity gradually developed. During the activity, university students from overseas also joined in the fun, bringing the participants closer together.

The high school students, who had been through so many difficulties and challenges during the three days of various programs, were refreshed and had many smiles on their faces. The bright voices of the high school students and university students echoed across the vast Gunma sky from the center of the large lake.

After lunch, the seminar continued from Day 2, with overseas university students giving classes in English. The seminar was filled with the thoughts and feelings of each overseas university student, including hands-on learning and watching videos. The content of the seminar was more in-depth than the first seminar, and some students looked a little confused. However, the faces of the high school students were severe as they tried to learn as much as possible from the overseas university students.

The last project of the day was a "self-analysis project. University students and high school students were paired together for two hours to think about their characteristics and how their experiences in life have shaped them through the interview work. During the planning period, the students reflected on their own past experiences and thought about what they felt and gained at that time through dialogue.

Tomorrow marks the turn of summer school. The faces of the high school students who have learned various things are becoming brighter and brighter day by day.

【Day5】 創る

HLAB GUNMA 2023もついに終盤を迎えようとしています。

5日目の今日は昨日と同じようにセミナーで始まり、昼食後には映画監督である篠原哲雄さん、外山文治さんによるワークショップが行われました。本ワークショップでは映画という表現方法を用いて、常識の範囲を超えた創造性を、トークショーや実際にお二人が制作された短編映画の観賞を通して高校生に体験してもらいました。

映画鑑賞後は近くのグループでお互いの考え方やアウトプットの違いに気づくこと、その違いに面白さを見出すお二人からのお話を聞くことで、自分にしかない道を切り開いていかれた監督自身について知る貴重な経験になりました。2時間詰め込まれた内容によって、企画テーマである「常識を疑う」ことについて高校生1人1人が考えるきっかけになったと同時に、自ら学びを深めていく様子も見られ、高校生の主体的な学びを感じることが出来たと思います。

ワークショップの後にはタレントショーが開催されました。高校生だけでなく大学生メンターも、自分の特技や仲間にシェアしたい思い思いのパフォーマンスを堂々と披露していました。最後には参加者全員で音楽に乗り、サマースクール中の絆がより深まったように感じました。

夕食後にはHLABの代表理事である小林亮介を迎えて、セッションが行われました。HLABの設立やサマースクールに懸ける思い、また、人との繋がりや、日常の中での出会いの大切さを感じさせられるお話を頂きました。

そして12人というたくさんのゲストをお迎えしたフリーインタラクション。これまでHLABに関わってきた卒業生であるアラムナイもおり、HLABのコミュニティの良さがあふれた時間となりました。また、前回のフリーインタラクションに比べて、積極的に話に向かう姿が見られました。

5日目は高校生の発想力とオリジナリティに溢れる1日になりました。

The HLAB Summer School is coming to an end, and today, the fifth day, started with a seminar as yesterday, followed by a workshop by filmmakers Tetsuo Shinohara and Bunji Sotoyama after lunch. In this workshop, high school students were able to experience creativity beyond the bounds of common sense through the use of film as a medium of expression, through a talk show, and by watching short films actually produced by the two filmmakers.

After watching the film, the students in the nearby groups noticed the differences in the way of thinking and output between each other. Listening to the two directors who found the differences interesting, was a valuable experience to learn about the director himself, who has opened up a path that only he can open up. The two hours of packed content provided an opportunity for each high school student to think about the project's theme of "questioning common sense," and at the same time, we were able to see them deepening their learning and feel that they were learning proactively.

After the workshop, a talent show was held. Not only high school students but also mentors proudly performed their special skills and their own thoughts that they wanted to share with their peers. It was a time full of smiles as everyone was able to learn about unexpected aspects of each other that were not evident in the program. In the end, all the participants joined in the music, and it seemed as if their bond during the summer school had deepened.

After dinner, a session was held with HLAB Founder Ryosuke Kobayashi. He talked about the establishment of HLAB and his passion for summer school, as well as the importance of connecting with others and meeting people in everyday life. Then, we welcomed 12 guests to the free interaction session. Some of the guests were alumni who have been involved with HLAB in the past, and it was a time filled with the goodness of the HLAB community.

The fifth day was a day full of creativity and originality from the high school students.

【Day6】 交わす

HLAB サマースクールも残すところあと1日。本日6日目が終わりました。
今日は主な企画としてフリーインタラクション、テーマトーク、キャンプファイヤーがありました。フリーインタラクションでは、高校生参加者が社会人のゲストの方々に気になることを聞いていました。

テーマトークの時間では、まず個人でサマースクールに参加を決めたときの思いや目標を書き出し、今の自分にどれだけ満足しているか、そしてその理由を書き出し、それをもとに共有と少しの対話を行いました。その後、この6日間で掘り下げてきた自身や学びについてのテーマや、サマースクールが終わってしまう前に改めてお互いを知れるようなテーマ、果てはみんなで一緒に考え込んでしまうような哲学的なテーマまで、バラエティに富んだ10のテーマから自分が話したいテーマを選んでグループになり、各々自由に話していました。参加した高校生は人生のターニングポイントというテーマに対して、楽しそうにしていても過去の話を聞いてみると波のある人生の話を聞けたという声がありました。

夜のキャンプファイヤーでは、点火直後から海外大生メンターによるいくつかのゲームをして大いに盛り上がりました。そのあとも、個人的に話したいメンターや高校生と自由に話して最後の時間を過ごしていました。
挙手してくれた高校生が今の率直な気持ちを話し、周りにいる高校生とシェアしてくれていました。たった5日前に出会った仲間ですが、自分の意見や感じたことを素直に言語化して共有できました。

キャンプファイヤー後には、ハウスで過ごす最後の夜のリフレクションが行われました。リフレクション後にはお別れに向けて涙を流しながら話をする高校生も多く見られました。まだまだ話し足りない高校生はメンターやほかの高校生とリフレクション後も大広間で話し合い、自分の夢や進路についての相談をしていました。

今日は全体を通して自分の6日間の振り返りを行い、明日からの旅立ちに向かっての準備をすることができました。

Only one day left of the HLAB summer school. The sixth day ended today.
Today's main programs were Free Interaction, Theme Talk, and Campfire. In Free Interaction, high school students asked guests what they were interested in.

During the theme talk time, participants first individually wrote down their thoughts and goals when they decided to participate in the summer school, how satisfied they are with themselves now, and why. They then chose a topic they wanted to talk about and formed into groups, each speaking freely.
High school students responded to the theme of turning points in their lives by saying that even though they seemed to be enjoying themselves, when they heard stories from their past, they were able to hear about their lives in waves.

At the evening campfire, the global side mentors emceed the event right after the fire was lit, and we played several games and had a lot of fun. After that, they spent their last hours talking freely with mentors and high school students they wanted to talk to. The high school students who raised their hands spoke frankly about their current feelings and shared them with the high school students around them. Although they had met each other only 5 days before, they were honestly verbalizing and sharing their opinions and feelings.

After the campfire, a reflection was held for the last night spent at the House. After the reflection, many high school students talked with tears in their eyes as they said goodbye. High school students who still had more to say continued to talk with their mentors and other high school students in the hall after the reflection, discussing their dreams and career paths.

The students were able to reflect on their six days and prepare for their departure tomorrow.

【Day7】 架ける

サマースクール最終日を迎えました。

パッキングを終え、朝食を食べた後は「ビジョンワークショップ」を通して自分自身の未来を考えるワークを行いました。
今日からちょうど1年後の自分のことを考え、内容は進路のことや次なる挑戦のことなど多岐に渡りました。ワークに取り組む高校生たちの目は真剣そのもの。近くの人に考えた未来について共有する時間には、夢や目標を泣きながら熱く語り合ってる高校生たちの姿がありました。サマースクール1週間の集大成の時間となったワークショップで、高校生たちはこれまでで一番生き生きと目を輝かせながら取り組んでいました。

午後はついに閉会式。開会式と同じたまごホールにて行われました。
高校生代表スピーチでは、7日間の数々のプログラムで感じたことや得たことを自分の言葉で伝えてくれました。1週間を通して仲間と共に真剣に向き合ったこと、ワークショップや対話の中で新たに見えた価値観がこれからの高校生の未来にとってかけがえのないものとなることを願っています。式の後半には1週間の思い出がいっぱい詰まったエンディングムービーをみんなで見ました。

閉会式を終え、いよいよお別れの時間です。多くの参加者が目に涙を浮かべ、別れを惜しみながらサマースクールを後にしました。

サマースクールは決して楽しいことばかりではなく、時には高校生にとって大きな壁が立ちはだかることもありました。しかしたくさん悩み、困難に真正面から立ち向かうことが彼らにとって大きな成長につながりました。
このHLAB GUNMA 2023での経験を経て、未来へと突き進む80人の参加者の背中はとても頼もしいものでした。自分の道を切り開き、最高の景色を手にしてくれる事と思います。

Finally, the last day of summer school has arrived.

After packing and eating breakfast, we worked on thinking about our own future through a "vision workshop." High school students thought about themselves exactly one year from today, and the content of the workshop covered a wide range of topics, including their career paths and their next challenges. Their eyes were serious as they engaged in the work. During the time for sharing their thoughts about the future with those nearby, the high school students were in tears as they passionately discussed their dreams and goals. The workshop was the culmination of a week of summer school, and the high school students were more lively than ever, their eyes shining brightly as they worked.

In the afternoon, the closing ceremony was finally held. It was held in the same Tamago hall as the opening ceremony. In her speech as a representative of the high school students, she shared in her own words what she felt and gained during the 7-day program. We hope that what they seriously experienced with their peers throughout the week and the new sense of value they gained through the workshops and dialogues will be invaluable for the future of high school students. In the latter half of the ceremony, everyone watched the closing movie filled with memories of the week.

We hope that this summer school will be an unforgettable experience where they spent time discovering new sense of values and themselves.

After the closing ceremony, it was time to say goodbye. Most of the participants left the summer school with tears in their eyes, wishing each other a farewell. It was not all fun and sometimes there were big challenges standing in the way for high school students, but it was a great growth experience for them. Looking at students from behind as they leave, we could see 80 students stepping out to their own future.
