こんにちは。
2024年1月19日（金）東村山市の青葉商店街にオープンする「和國商店」の内覧会に行ってまいりました。

Hi. On Friday, January 19, 2024, I had a pleasure to visit the preview of "Wakuni Shop cafe", which will open in Aoba Shopping District in Higashimurayama City.

屋根や外壁などの建築板金を手がけるウチノ板金（東京都東村山市）が手仕事職人にこだわり、つくりあげたのが「和國商店」。
デザインは隈研吾建築都市設計事務所（東京都港区）、設計・施工は岡庭建設（東京都西東京市）。

"Wakuni Shop cafe" was created with a focus on handiwork craftsmen by Uchino Sheet Metal (Higashimurayama City, Tokyo), which handles architectural sheet metal such as roofs and exterior walls. Designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates (Minato-ku, Tokyo), and  constructed by Okaniwa Construction (Nishitokyo-shi, Tokyo).

約60年前に開発された青葉商店街。今では殆どの店にシャッターが下り閑散とした通りに化していました。

Developed about 60 years ago, most of the shops in Aoba Shopping District have their shutters down and the streets are now deserted.

ここを地元として育ったウチノ板金の内野さんは、「青葉商店街に何か恩返しできることはないか、手仕事職人がモノづくりの魅力を発信できる場所が作れないか」という想いを抱き続けていたそうです。

Mr.Uchino from Uchino Sheet Metal, who grew up in this area, has always had the desire to give something back to the community, and turn Aoba Shopping District into a place where handicraft craftsmen can promote and show their creation.

そんな時（2022年）築52年のたばこ屋さんの建物と出会い、使用目的も決まっていないのに衝動購入。

In 2022, he came across a 52-year-old tobacco store building , and bought it
impulsively, without any idea or plan on how he would be using it.

その1週間後、お仲間により隈さんとのご縁ができ、この建物の監修デザインを引き受けていただくことになったそう。

A week later, a friend connected with him with Mr.Kuma, and the decision was made that Mr.Kuma would supervise the design of this building (Wakuni Shop Cafe).

Mr Uchino’s article describes in details of how they came to be.

もともと板金に興味があったという隈さんは、ウチノ板金の折鶴を見た時「凄い！」と感じたと。日本ほど板金の技術が優れている国はないそうで、その技術に誇りを持ち邁進しているウチノ板金に心動かされたそうです。

Mr. Kuma, who had always been interested in sheet metal, said that when he saw Uchino Sheet Metal's origami cranes, he simply felt “wow!” and astonished. 
Apparently, there is no other country with sheet metal technology as superior as Japan, and he was moved by how Uchino Sheet Metal takes pride in what they do and is pushing its technology forward.

鱗のような銅板は、広島県甘日市の速谷神社で使用されていた玉垣の銅板葺を再利用。

The scale-looking copper plates are reused from the copper plate roofing of the Tamagaki fence that was used at Hayatani Shrine in Kanichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture.

699枚の五角形ユニットは電動機械に頼らず、地元の職人さんの手加工で作り上げられました。

The 699 pentagonal units were hand- crafted by local craftsmen without using any electric machines in the process.

経年変化した緑青銅板に「時」を感じます。

You can feel the "time" in the aged patina bronze plate.

和國商店プロジェクト＃2（Wakuni Shop Cafe Project #2）

隈さんはこんな風に仰っていました。
「昔はゼロから立ち上げる、そういうものが開発と呼ばれるものだったけど、それでは「時間が途切れる」んですね。それは寂しくて格好悪いもの。今あるものを循環させていくことは、それらが体験した長い時間を味方にできるんです。「時間が繋がる」ので懐かしい感じもしますね。」

Mr. Kuma says "In the past, something starting completely from scratch, was called development. However such creation cuts the continuous time, and I find that sad and uncool.
By recycling what we currently have, we can benefit from everything that
each piece has experienced and have gone through in their previous life. That feels nostalgic because time is connected."

新国立競技場を設計された隈さんにご縁を感じ、デザインの依頼をしたという椅子は、内野さんが「いつか何かに使えるのではないか」と購入していた旧国立競技場の観客席の座面が使われています。

Mr. Uchino felt a connection to Mr. Kuma, who designed the new National Stadium, and asked him to design the chair that Mr. Uchino had purchased from the old National Stadium, thinking "Maybe it could be used for something someday.”

椅子の脚は、岡庭建設が木で下地を組み、タニタハウジングウェアの高速生成緑青銅板を、ウチノ板金が加工、取り付けをしています。

The legs of the chair are made of wood by Okaniwa Construction, and Uchino Sheet Metal processes high-speed green bronze plates from Tanita Housing Ware and installed.

店内にも職人の技が溢れていました。
鈍い光沢が美しかったカウンター。

Inside the store was also full of craftsmanship. The counter had a beautiful dull luster.

そして、岡山県瀬戸内市に焙煎所を構えるキノシタショウテンの焙煎職人が選んだスペシャルティコーヒーを味わうことができます。

You can also enjoy specialty coffee selected by the roasters of Kinoshita Shouten. They have a roastery in Setouchi City, Okayama prefecture.

板金職人、木工職人、家具職人、焙煎職人〜様々な職人の技術が詰まった「和國商店」。

"Wakuni Shop Cafe" is filled with the skills of various craftsmen: sheet metal craftsmen, woodworkers, furniture craftsmen, and roasters.

ああ、シャネルメティエダールを思い出す。
シャネルのメティエダールコレクションは、職人たちの卓越した技術を保存するためのもの。刺繍に金細工、羽細工といった「技術」を纏える形にしてくれるコレクションなんです。

And this reminded me of Chanel Métiers d’Art, a collection which preserves the exceptional skills of its artisans. It brings together "techniques" such as embroidery, goldwork, and featherwork.

ここ和國商店では、技術と職人さんたちへの敬意、誇りが感じられました。

Here at ”Wakuni Shop Cafe”, I could feel the respect and pride towards the technology and craftsmen.

全ての人がその人独自の特性を持っていて、それを発揮していくことが「仕事」なんだと思う。

The energy here made be think, that all people have their own unique talent, and that "work" is about making the most of what you have.

そしてその特性（仕事）には適切な感謝（報酬）が支払われるべき。

And that appropriate remuneration should be paid for that effort.

ウチノ板金では、日給月給制ではなく固定月給制を採用しているそう。それは、天気に左右される建築板金の世界で、給料の不安定感をなくすため。
また、堂々と休暇を取ることができる社風のようです。

Uchino Sheet Metal apparently uses a fixed monthly salary system instead of a daily wage system (which is rare in this industry in Japan). The aim of such system is to eliminate the sense of instability in salaries in the world of architectural sheet metal work, which is dependent on weather or season.

Also, they have a company culture to take proper days of vacation. (In Japan, regardless of the company policy, many people hesitate to take vacation.)

30年前にホテル川久で感じたことを思い出した。
通常ゼネコンへ一任する大規模施工を、オーナー自らが全ての作業を各業界の一流のつくり手たちに依頼し、創りあげたのが「ホテル川久」。

I remember what I felt at Hotel Kawakyu 30 years ago.
Hotel Kawakyu was created by the owner, who gathered top-notch builders in each industry himself, instead of outsourcing the large-scale construction work to general contractors.

ひとりひとりが自らの力（特性）を自覚し輝けば、日本が輝き、きっと世界は嬉しいで満たされまわっていく。
潜在意識下で蠢いていたものが急速に顕在化してくる感がある。新しい世界が開けてきたね。

If each and every one of us can be more aware of our strengths (and talent) ,
I feel that this country will shine and the world will be filled with much more joy.
It feels like something that was lurking in my subconscious is rapidly coming to the surface and this new world is opening up.

「小さいけど凄いことになる。」という隈さんの言葉が少し解ったような気がした。

And in my own way, I feel like I understood a little of Mr. Kuma's words, “It may be small now, but it will be a great thing.”
