Corona Virus lockdown has put India in a reflective mode. Life has always been very scheduled in the cities with a set daily routine which has now been shaken, sad for a few but for some a very pleasant one. Here are a set of pros and cons that Indians are feeling and reporting.

Digital India – People are happy that Monday morning blues no more bother them. Although Monday is the starting day of the week, the whole idea of rushing for work, traffic snarls, reaching a meeting on time has taken a back seat, as everything has moved online. A new digital India is slowly emerging.
Essential Buying – Planned buying, optimum utilisation of items, less wastage, discarding the unnecessary is the norm. Is it really necessary? is one question Indians are asking themselves often.
Relieved Environment – Gone are the days of traffic honks, car emissions and pollution. Mother nature has taken a pause and the environment feels rejuvenated. The cities are witnessing the return of birds and their pleasant calls. Air is cleaner, stars are visible at night and people are also noticing animals at places they usually did not. This slow down has been a process of healing for the environment too.
Reflect, Reset, re-examine the new mantra! – Indians feel lockdown is a good way to self-reflect. They are relooking at their routines, examining existing habits and behaviours. They feel it is also a time to take good care of themselves, so that one can emerge positively from this situation. Facetime with parents, zooming with cousins, virtual family meetups are now common. Parents forced to stay home are now spending time with their children that they earlier couldn’t. The family is becoming more cohesive as one values and realises which relationships sustain and nourish us

Unfamiliarity – New routines are uncomfortable to set in. Many people work in shifts, also stay in shifts in their houses. Which means at any given point of time, there are more people, less space to stay and accommodation is a challenge. People have never seen such times and there is much chaos on what needs to be done. India’s informal work force that stays and lives in such a way has fallen into deeper poverty
Uncertainty - Jobs, routines, everything has changed. Economists, scientists, medical experts are all giving opinions on what is going to happen, yet no one knows what the future holds. The poor are hit hard, as they have no jobs. There are a lot of migrant workers, who work in shifts on daily wages and are the only supporting members of the family. They face unemployment and dejection.
Underlying anxiety - With restrictions galore, there is an underlying anxiety about jobs, trade and education. Schools are shut and the government has been forced to impose restrictions on travel which not only impacts trade but also family meet ups. It affects people emotionally and also has a monetary impact. Children are at a loss due to schools being shut. Many small setups have gone out of business leading to losses
