英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのコンピレーション・アルバム 'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume II' (1971年11月17日、下) に収められた 'Watching the River Flow' です(「河のながれを見つめて」)。

詩集 ('Lyrics 1962-2012', 2016) では本歌は11枚目のアルバム 'New Morning' (1970) の追加詩篇に入っています。

本歌は当初、'Spanish Is the Loving Tongue' をB面にしたシングル盤として発売されました(1971年6月3日)。

録音されたのは1971年3月16-19日 [16-18日と記す文献も] (Blue Rock Studios, New York) です。一聴してすぐわかる唯一無二のピアノ・スタイルの Leon Russell がピアノを弾いており、曲のプロデュースもしています。

シングル盤では、プロデュースをボブ・ディランが行ったと誤記されています(下) [source: Discogs]。

ディランの依頼でリオンが集めたミュージシャンは、Jesse Ed Davis (g), Carl Radle (b), Jim Keltner (ds) ら(彼らは同年8月1日に、ジョージ・ハリスン主催のバングラデシュ救援コンサートに召集されます)。

ジム・ケルトナーはディランが 'Watching the River Flow' に取り組んでいる時のようすをつぎのように回顧しています。ディランがたえず詩作をしていたことが窺えるエピソードです。

〈ボブは鉛筆とメモ帳をもって、たくさん書いていたね。彼はこれらの歌をスタジオの現場で書いていたか、あるいは少なくとも仕上げていた〉
(I remember Bob.... had a pencil and a notepad, and he was writing a lot. He was writing these songs on the spot in the studio, or finishing them up at least.) ['Uncut', October 2008]

リオン・ラッセルは自身のアルバム 'Leon Russell and the Shelter People' (1971, 下) でディランの曲を2曲とりあげています ('A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall' と 'It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry') ［CD 化されるときに、さらに3曲ディランの歌がボーナス・トラックとして加わっています。'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue', 'Love Minus Zero/No Limit', 'She Belongs to Me'］。

リオン自身もこの歌のすばらしいカヴァーを録音しています ('Tangled Up In Blues: Songs of Bob Dylan - This Ain't No Tribute', 1999, 所収、下)。
