英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume II' (1971年、下) に収められた 'You Ain't Goin' Nowhere' です(「どこにも行けない」)。

オリジナルの録音は1967年夏 (Big Pink, West Saugerties, New York)。'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume II' に収められたヴァーションは1971年9月24日の録音 (Studio B, NY)。

オリジナル版からさまざまに歌詞が変遷しています。マルゴタンらは、ディランは特定の書き方に固執せず、単語の音に焦点を当てていると述べていますが、どうでしょうか。

ここではリクス校訂版 ('The Basement Tapes' の章に所収のヴァーション［アルバム 'The Basement Tapes Raw: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 11' に所収の 'You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Take 2)' と同じ歌詞］) によって考えてみます。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'You Ain't Goin' Nowhere' は、1-2連がヴァースとコーラスの関係が変化し、豊かな示唆をふくむのに対し、3-4連は意味に乏しいノンセンス詩のように見え、ヴァースとコーラスの関係が平板である。ただ、音韻は一貫して興味深い。3連の 'the tree with roots' のフレーズは、ディランの志向を表す言葉として多くの人に記憶されている。
