英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月3本目です。歌われる詩の2回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのコンピレーション・アルバム 'Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Volume II' (1971年11月17日、下) に収められた 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' です(「マスターピース」)。

前回とりあげた 'Watching the River Flow' と同じく、インスピレーションの枯れた時期を象徴する作品といわれます。

しかし、本歌は、のちに、1975年の Rolling Thunder Review 公演旅行の各ショーの幕開きを飾ります。インスピレーションがあふれる時期です。

このことから、ヘイリン (Clinton Heylin) はこの歌が(インスピレーションを泉に喩えると)渇水期と洪水期の両方で効果がある歌であると述べています。おもしろい見解です。

しかも、もうひとつおもしろいことに、本歌は歌詞が大幅に変遷しています。したがって、どの時点の詩をとりあげるかで、議論が変わってくる可能性があります。

ボブ・ディランの 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' は、自分が傑作を描くことができたならという、インスピレーション枯渇期の作品に見える歌だが、そこからアーティストとしてのディランを考えることもできる。Gracyk のアーティスト論を概観してみる。
