英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月3本目です。歌われる詩の2回めです。今回はボブ・ディラン4枚目のアルバム 'Another Side of Bob Dylan' (1964) に収められた 'My Back Pages' です(「 マイ・バック・ペイジズ」)。

この歌は4枚目のアルバムを 'Chimes of Freedom' とともに代表する歌です。'Chimes of Freedom' ではランボーやブレークを想起させるイメジの嵐でしたが、この歌ではディランは過去のすべての影響から決別しています。

この歌は 'Blowin' in the Wind' や 'Masters of War' 以降の彼を予言者と称えた人々との決定的で必然的な別れであると、マルゴタンは述べています。どういうことなのでしょうか。

マルゴタンは最後にジョーン・バエズとディランとの違いについてディランが言ったことばを引きます。彼女は物事を変えられると思った。一方、彼は誰にも変えられないと知っていた、と (Joan Baez, 'And a Voice to Sing With: A Memoir', Simon & Schuster, 2009)。

これは 'The Times They Are A-Changin'' のリクスによる分析で言及されるローマの諺「時代は変化する。それに応じて我々も変わる」を想起させます。ディランの考えでは、「時代は変わる。誰も物事を変えられない」となるのです。興味深いことです。この歌の詩の内容を考えてみましょう。
