英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランの8枚目アルバム 'John Wesley Harding' (1967、下) に収められた 'The Wicked Messenger' です(「悪意の使者」)。

録音されたのは1967年11月29日 (Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville) です。

タイトルは箴言13章17節の引用と、同題の研究書 (Marqusee, 'Wicked Messenger') で指摘されています。どんな歌なのでしょう。リクス (Christopher Ricks) らによる校訂版で考えてみます。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'The Wicked Messenger' は、旧約聖書をふまえた歌といわれる。また、バラッドの形をしていないバラッドとも、ディラン自身が言っている。3連しかないが、そこにバラッド的空間を凝縮しつつ、旧約聖書に現れる悪の使者を唄う。
