英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月3本目です。歌われる詩の2回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのボクス・セット 'Biograph' (1985、下) に収められた 'I'll Keep It with Mine' です(「 アイル・キープ・イット・ウィズ・マイン」)。

この歌が7枚目のアルバム 'Blonde on Blonde' (1966) のアウトテイクの一つとして録音されたのは1966年1月27日(Studio A, New York)です。そのテイクは 'The Bootleg Series, Vol 1-3: Rare & Unreleased 1961-1991' (1991) に収められています。

決定版と思われる、'Biograph'  に収められたヴァーションは 1965年1月13日の録音です。'Bringing It All Back Home' の録音セッションで録られたものです。今回はその 'Biograph' のヴァーションを基準にします。

これ以外に、ピアノ伴奏のデモ版(1964年6月の録音)が 'The Bootleg Series, Vol 9: The Witmark Demos: 1962-1964' (2010) に収められています。

ジュディ・コリンズのLP 'Judy Collins Sings Dylan ... Just like a Woman' (1993、下) のライナーノーツで、ディランは 'I'll Keep It with Mine' をコリンズのために書いたと言っています。コリンズは1967年に同曲をシングル盤で出しました。

また、ディランは同曲を Nico にも提供し、Nico は1枚目のソロ・アルバム 'Chelsea Girl' (1967、下) で同曲を録音しています。ヘイリン (Clinton Heylin) は本歌はニコのために書かれたと言っています。

だれのために書かれたかはともかく、この歌はどんな歌なのでしょう。リクス (Christopher Ricks) らによる校訂版で考えてみます。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'I'll Keep It with Mine' は、時間をいかに守るかを問題にする点では 'The Times They Are A-Changin'' に似ている。大切な時間をきみと共に守ろうとすることと、きみが探しているものがおそらく時間であることとを哲学的な詩にこめる。
