英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディラン4枚目のアルバム 'Another Side of Bob Dylan' (1964) に収められた 'It Ain't Me, Babe' です(「 悲しきベイブ」)。

1964年5月に London で完成されたことがほぼ確実とされている歌で(ヘイリンの説)、ということは、つまり、アルバム 'Another Side' の録音された6月より前ということになります。それがなぜ分るかというと、5月9日から18日にかけて滞在した London の Mayfair Hotel の notepaper の上に歌の原稿が書かれているからです。ひとつ問題となるのは、その原稿では4連あったことです。現行の歌は3連ですから、その1連は棄てられたことになります。この歌の初演は5月17日、London の Royal Festival Hall においてですから、出来たてほやほやで唄ったことになりますが、その時は現行の3連までしか唄っていません。もう一つの連はどうなったのでしょうか。それは謎として残っています。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'It Ain't Me, Babe' はガールフレンドの Suze Rotolo と別れたあとのボブの悲痛な思いを反映した歌といわれる。また、フォークシンガーのリーダーの地位にふさわしいのは自分ではないとのメタファがこめられているともいわれる。歌の第1行は16世紀のフォークソングから採られている。
