天龍寺の歴史は、その美しさだけでなく、その経緯においても深い感動を与えるものです。この神聖な地は、かつて嵯峨天皇の皇后、橘嘉智子によって開創された禅寺・檀林寺の跡地で、後に後嵯峨上皇が仙洞御所を建て、続いて亀山上皇が仮の御所を営んだ場所です。天龍寺自体は足利尊氏と夢窓疎石の手により、後醍醐天皇の菩提を弔うために創建されました。数々の火災と戦乱を経て何度も再建されたこの寺は、その都度、美しさを取り戻してきました。

特に注目すべきは創建時の困難さです。造営には光厳上皇と尊氏が荘園を寄進しましたが、それだけでは資金が足りず、尊氏の弟である直義が夢窓と協議し、日元貿易を再開。これが「天龍寺船」の始まり。その利益を建設費に充てました。これは、寺院建設だけでなく、日本の貿易史においても重要な一歩でした。その地に足利尊氏を開基とし、夢窓疎石を開山として開かれたのが天龍寺で、その目的は後醍醐天皇の菩提を弔うため暦応2年（1339）に創建された。

また、天龍寺の境内地はかつて広大で、嵐山や渡月橋、亀山公園を含んでいましたが、時代の変遷で大部分が失われ、現在の境内はかつての十分の一にまで縮小しています。この変化は、日本の歴史の移り変わりを物語っており、訪れる者に深い思索を促します。

The history of Tenryu-ji Temple is deeply moving, not only in its beauty but also in its origins. This sacred site was initially a Zen temple, Danrin-ji, founded by Kachiko Tachibana, the Empress of Emperor Saga. It later became the site of the Sento Imperial Palace built by Emperor Go-Saga, followed by a temporary palace of Emperor Kameyama. Tenryu-ji itself was established by Ashikaga Takauji and Muso Soseki to mourn Emperor Go-Daigo. Despite numerous fires and wars, the temple has been rebuilt several times, each time regaining its beauty.

The difficulty during its construction is notable. Emperors Go-Kogon and Takauji donated their estates, but funds were still insufficient. Takauji's brother, Tadayoshi, collaborated with Muso to restart trade with Yuan China, initiating the "Tenryu-ji Ship". The profits were used for construction, marking an important step in both temple building and Japanese trade history. Tenryu-ji was founded in 1339 to mourn Emperor Go-Daigo, with Takauji as its patron and Muso as its founding priest.

Originally, Tenryu-ji's grounds were vast, including Arashiyama, Togetsukyo Bridge, and Kameyama Park, but most were lost over time, reducing the current grounds to a tenth of their original size. This change reflects the shifts in Japanese history, prompting deep reflection among visitors.

During my visit, I was particularly impressed by its tranquility and serenity. Despite centuries of war and natural disasters, the temple has always maintained peace and quiet. The beauty of its gardens, the majesty of its architecture, and the living history bring deep comfort to visitors. The Sogenchi Garden is especially known for its quiet beauty, perfectly expressing the harmony of Japanese garden artistry and nature.

The serene beauty of the garden makes visitors forget the passage of time, leading them to deep peace. The delicate beauty in its details shows the perfect fusion of nature and human artistry. The harmony of Japanese tradition and nature's power here leaves a lasting impression.

Despite repeated destruction, it always regains its beauty, symbolizing the unchanging spirituality and indomitable spirit of the Japanese people.

This visit allowed me to introspect and temporarily escape daily life. The temple's quiet and beautiful scenery leaves a calming aftertaste and offers new perspectives for everyday life. It's a timeless sanctuary harmonizing past and present, nature and humanity, stillness and movement, offering peace and contemplation to all who visit.

Experiencing Tenryu-ji surpasses mere tourism, invoking deep introspection and respect for history. Its tranquility and solemnity bring calmness to visitors' hearts, making them feel the depth of Japanese culture and history. Walking its grounds, considering the countless footsteps on its cobblestones, one realizes it has been loved and respected for centuries. More than a tourist spot, it's a sanctuary of timeless beauty and peace, offering introspection and cultural richness, and a haven for finding tranquility away from daily life.
