芸術、創作について
「芸術」という言葉を知らない人はいないだろう。だがいざ「芸術」が何か説明してみろ、といわれると答えるのは難しい。ぼんやりとしていて、でこぼこだが鋭く、なにかきらっと光る正直さ。これが芸術という言葉からわたしが連想するイメージだ。この記事では、芸術や創造、創作行為に関連する言葉を紹介したい。(著者和訳）
1.Ethan Hawke
"Well…most people don't spend a lot of time thinking about poetry. Right? They have a life to live, and they're not really that concerned with Allen Ginsberg's poems or anybody's poems, until their father dies, they go to a funeral, you lose a child, somebody breaks your heart, they don't love you anymore, and all of a sudden, you're desperate for making sense out of this life… 'Has anybody ever felt this bad before? How did they come out of this cloud?' Or the inverse…something great. You meet somebody and your heart explodes. You love them so much, you can't even see straight. You know, you're dizzy. 'Did anybody feel like this before? What is happening to me?' And that's when art's not a luxury, it's actually sustenance. We need it."

わたしが言葉、音楽、美術などに心から惹かれるようになったのは青年期以降だったように思う。自我が芽生え、自分とは何なのか、自分の進みたい道はどんな姿をしているのか考え始めたとき。友人関係に悩んだり、喪失を経験したとき。確実に何か言葉・考えを求めているけれど、それが必ずしも家族や周囲の人からのものではないとき。そんなときに、芸術は「お高くとまったもの」ではなく、わたしの生活に欠かせない泉のような存在になっていた。忘れられない言葉や旋律、絵画は私の体に記憶され、意識と一体となり、私を活かしている。
2.Glenn Gould
"The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline…but rather the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity."
「芸術の目的は、アドレナリンを一時的に放出することではなく、むしろ、驚きと静けさの状態を、生涯にわたって徐々に構築することである。」
芸術はたびたび、刺激的なものとしてとらえられる。しかし本質的に芸術は、静けさのなかで呼吸する生命体のような存在なのかもしれない。
3.Oscar Wilde
"The moment that an artist takes notice of what other people want, and tries to supply the demand, he ceases to be an artist."
「他の人々の望んでいることに注目し、その需要に応えようとした瞬間、その人はアーティストではなくなる。」
創作活動をしていると私たちは「これで生活が賄えるか」考える。私たちには日常の生活がある。屋根、寝る場所、食べ物などが必要だ。だがその要素を重視するあまり、「受け」を狙ってしまうと、その人はアーティストではなくビジネスマンになってしまう。
4.Allen Ginsberg
"To gain your own voice, forget about having it heard."
「自分の声を得るには、聞いてもらうことを一時忘れるんだ。」
彼のこの言葉は先ほどのOscar Wildの言葉とも関連する。何かが生まれるとき、そこには「出し手」と「受け手」が存在する。出す側は、受け取る側の反応を忘れた状態で本来創作活動を行うべきなのだろう。
5.Jeff Buckley
"I know there are so many new ideas that haven’t even occurred to me, and it’s going to take more time and maturity for me to channel them. I’ll just let it happen and try not to rush it too much."
「私には思いつきもしなかった新しいアイデアがたくさんあることはわかっている。それらを実現するには、もっと時間と成熟が必要だ。私はただそれが起こるのに任せて、あまり急がないよう努める。」
創作活動をしていると、われわれはつい生産性について考えてしまう。だが、ある程度自然に任せて焦らず辛抱強く継続すること。創作にはそんな忍耐力がとても大事なのだとおもう。人間は結局マシンではないのだから。
6.James Baldwin
"Most people live in almost total darkness…people, millions of people whom you will never see, who don’t know you, never will know you, people who may try to kill you in the morning, live in a darkness which...if you have that funny terrible thing which every artist can recognize and no artist can define...you are responsible to those people to lighten, and it does not matter what happens to you. You are being used in the way a crab is useful, the way sand certainly has some function. It is impersonal. This force which you didn’t ask for, and this destiny which you must accept, is also your responsibility. And if you survive it, if you don’t cheat, if you don’t lie, it is not only, you know, your glory, your achievement, it is almost our only hope... Because only an artist can tell, and only artists have told since we have heard of man, what it is like for anyone who gets to this planet to survive it. What it is like to die, or to have somebody die; what it is like to be glad... The trouble is that although the artist can do it, the price that he has to pay himself and that you, the audience, must also pay, is a willingness to give up everything, to realize that although you spent twenty-seven years acquiring this house, this furniture, this position, although you spent forty years raising this child, these children, nothing, none of it belongs to you. You can only have it by letting it go. You can only take if you are prepared to give... It is a total risk of everything, of you and who you think you are, who you think you’d like to be, where you think you’d like to go...everything, and this forever, forever."

アーティストは、普段日の目にさらされることのない人々の闇、醜さ、小ささなどに気づき、彼らの孤独に寄り添うことができる。その表現方法は決して一様ではない。しかし、作品の創造にあたって嘘、不誠実は許されない。そうした行為には責任が伴う。創造と破壊、喪失は常に繰り返される。何かを得るには何かを手放す必要がある。創造は常に変化を伴う。生き物と同じように呼吸し、補給し、脈打っている。
