数年前に
甥と上野動物園に行った

その頃は
流行り病にかかる心配なんて
する必要がなかった

動物園には
たくさんの外国人がいた
そこでは
たくさんの外国語を耳にした

「グーテンターク」

グーテンタークという言葉を
聞いたとき
その言葉を発した人が
ドイツ人だと理解できた
大学生の頃
ちょっとだけドイツ語を
勉強したことがあったから

甥と一緒に
カバの前に立っていたとき
近くにいた幼い女の子が
「シトーエータ」と
声をあげるのを聞いた

私はまったくロシア語に
精通していないけれども
シトーエータという言葉が
「これなぁに？」という
意味であることは理解できた

その女の子は
カバが泳いでいるのを見るのが
初めてで
その動物の名前を
知りたかったのだろう

女の子のお母さんは
微笑みながら
女の子の質問に答えていた
この光景を見たとき
甥も一緒に微笑んだ
私は幸せを感じた

その時も今も
カバをロシア語で
なんというのか
私にはわからない
けれどもその女の子の発した
「シトーエータ」は
今でも私の心の中に
漂っている

大きな悲劇を経験するとき
私たちは無力感に襲われる

途方に暮れてしまう

募金するというのは
１つの選択肢だけれども
募金する代わりに
ロシア語やウクライナ語の言葉を
覚えることは
なんらかの意味を持つのではないか

外国語を学ぶ目的は
たとえ不十分であったとしても
自分自身のことを
理解してもらうだけでなく
相手のことを理解することにある

「生兵法は怪我のもと」
ということわざはあるが
外国語を少しだけ学ぶことは
平和なことであり
それがいつの日か
平和への途を
切り開くことに
繋がればいいなと思う

この記事は、２年くらい前に英語で書いた記事をそのまま日本語に訳したものです。

  Several years ago, I went to 
Ueno Zoo with my nephew.
At that time, we didn't have to
worry about catching a plague 
and there were a lot of foreigners
in the zoo. I heard a lot of foreign
languages there.

  "Guten Tag." 
 When I heard the "Guten Tag,"
I was able to find the speaker
a German because I had studied
some German when I was a 
university student.

  When my nephew and I stood 
in front of hippos, I heard a little
girl nearby exclaim "Что это?"
Although I was not at all proficient
in Russian, I at least understood
that "Что это?"  was a Russian
phrase meaning "What is this ?"

  Maybe the little girl saw a hippo
swimming in the pool for the first
time and she wanted to know the 
name of the animal.
  Her mother answered the 
question with a smile.
Seeing this scene, my nephew
also smiled and I felt happy.

  I didn't and don't know what is 
called hippos in Russian, but 
the "Что это?" the little girl 
uttered lingers in my mind 
even now.

  When we experience a great 
tragedy, we tend to feel helpless.
We are at a loss what to do.
Sending money might be one 
option, however, instead of doing 
so, learning some Russian words
and some Ukrainian words may
have some meaning. 

  The purpose of learning a foreign
language consists not only in
making yourself understood,
but also in understanding others,
however insufficient it may be.
Although a proverb says that 
a little learning is a dangerous 
thing, a little learning of a foreign
language is a peaceful thing,
which I hope some day will pave 
the way for peace.
