静岡市東海道広重美術館では浮世絵を刷る体験もできますよ。
今回は刷り、としました。「摺り」の方がピッタリかもしれません。

～the process of printing～

～刷りの工程～

The last part of Ukiyoe making is printing.

浮世絵制作の最後の工程は刷りです。

It can be overlooked by many but it is still very important, especially for mass production.　

見落とされがちですが、特に大量生産においてはさらに重要となります。

The surishi刷師 (printer) is in charge of printing under the direct supervision of the artist who certified the colors.

刷師は、絵師の直接の監督の元、刷りを担当します。絵師が配色を決めています。

The printer arranges each block to put colors on the paper.

刷師は版木を整えて置き、紙に色を付けます。

The first block is for the outline and the colors are printed from lightest to darkest by using different color plates (irohan).

最初の版は輪郭のためです。そして明るい色から順に暗い色が刷られていきます。

その際、違った色版が使われます。

You can experience printing Ukiyoe firsthand in this museum.

この美術館で直に浮世絵を刷ることを体験できます。

You'll need two sheets of washi paper which you'll buy from the museum staff, who'll give you instructions on how to do it yourself.

美術館スタッフから二枚の和紙を買う必要があります。そのスタッフの方がどのようにするのか、やり方を説明してくれます。

In my experience, it was challenging to evenly put the color and rub the surface of washi paper with a special tool called 'baren'.

私がやってみたところ、色を付け、「バレン」という特別な道具を使って和紙の表面を均等にこするのは難しかったです。

To add a different color, the same process had to be done using a different color plate until the ukiyoe was completed.

違った色を加えるには、同じ工程を違った色版を使ってやらなくてはなりません。そしてようやく浮世絵が完成します。

Japanese students learn this printing process in art lessons, so I felt a little nostalgic.

日本人の生徒はこの刷りの工程を美術（図画工作）の時間に習います。ですから少し懐かしい思いがしました。

However, my concentration only lasted for ten minutes because I had to pay attention to the right position and the right amount of pressure.

しかし、私の集中力は10分しか続きませんでした。

正しい位置と力加減に注意して行わないといけないからです。

This experience enables you to understand how highly skilled printers are.

この経験をすれば、いかに刷師が高い技術を持っているか分かるはずです。
