駿府城の東御門も「桝形門・ますがたもん」。駿府城の他の門にもこの形が見られました。

ところで、「桝」と検索すると、最初に「桝太一」（元日本テレビアナウンサー）が出てきます。

桝形門・ますがたもん

‘Masu’ is a square wooden box used to measure grains like rice and liquid such as sake.

「桝」は四角い木製の箱で、米のような穀物、そして酒のような液体を量ります。

The Masaguta gate was inspired by the structure of masu.

桝形門は桝の形から来ています。

This term ‘masugata’ is often used to talk about a structure of gates in Japanese castles in the Edo period.

この言葉「桝形」は江戸時代の日本の城における門の構造を話すとき、よく出てきます。

Masugata gate is comprised of two gates that can monitor visitors.

桝形門は訪問者を監視できる二つの門から成り立っています。

Sumpu Castle also had some masugata gates to prevent suspicious people from entering the premises.

駿府城にもいくつかの桝形門があり、不審者が城内に入ってくるのを防いでいました。

The first gate is called ‘Korai-gate’.

最初の門は「高麗門」と呼ばれます。

‘Korai gate’ is a gate that has three roofs on the U shape structure.

「高麗門」とはコの字型の構造に三つの屋根が乗っている門です。

Once the visitors entered, they had to pass through an open space surrounded by a two-story buildings from three directions.

訪問者がいったん入ると、二階建ての門が三方向から囲んでいる空き地を通らなければなりませんでした。

One of the surrounding buildings is called ‘Yaguta gate’, which means a watchtower gate.

その空き地を囲んでいる建物の一つは「櫓門・やぐらもん」と呼ばれ、監視塔の門を意味します。

The visitors were also monitored from the back side of the first gate, meaning they were strictly monitored from four directions by the guards in the castle.

訪問者は後ろにある最初の門からも見られていました。つまり、いったん門に入ると、四方向から城の見張り人に厳重に監視されたのです。

In addition, there were windows on the second floor of the surrounding buildings, so guards could shoot any suspicious people who entered the castle.

さらに囲んでいる建物の二階には窓があり、見張りは城に入ってきたどんな不審者でも撃つことができました。

The Masugata gate became the model structure for all castle gates throughout the country during Edo period.

桝形門は江戸時代、城の門のモデルになりました。
