静岡市の「本通」は①道の名前、②葵区にある町名、二つの意味があります。大通りとしては葵区追手町から駿河区手越字水神までの約2.5キロメートルの片側2車線、計4車線の主要道路です。「静岡都市計画道路の変更（静岡市決定）」より

町名としては現在一丁目から十丁目まであります。

Hon-tori Part1

本通　パート１

Hon-tori literally means 'major road'.

本通は文字通り、「主要な通り」を意味します。

As the name suggests, this avenue flourished as a major part of the Old Tokaido in the city of Sumpu until the beginning of the Edo period.

名前が示すように、この通りは江戸時代の初めまで駿府の街における旧東海道の主要部分として栄えていました。

However, it should be noted that the situation of the avenue changed depending on the period.

しかし、この通りについては時代によって変わったことを記しておくべきでしょう。

According to a historical book written in the Edo period, ‘Sunkoku Zasshi’, this avenue was also called ‘Moto-tori’, which literally means ‘original avenue’.

江戸時代に書かれた書物の「駿国雑志」によると、この通り「元通」とも呼ばれ、「元々あった通り」を意味します。

It is considered that the names were derived as comparison with the "Shin-tori’, which means ‘new road'.

これらの名前は、新しい通りを意味する「新通」の対比に由来すると考えられます。

Another historical book stated that a milestone of the Old Tokaido was located on Hon-tori in 1604.

別の歴史書では旧東海道の一里塚は1604年、本通にありました。

It suggests that the original Tokaido route ran through Hon-tori in Sumpu before developing Shin-tori, the new avenue.

つまり、新通が開発される以前には、元の東海道は駿府において本通を通っていたことを示しています。

Under Sumpu’s development, led by Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu, the major road of Tokaido was changed from Hon-tori to Shin-tori as a part of the new city design in 1609.

徳川家康公によって進められた駿府の開発の下、1609年に都市計画の一部として東海道の主要道は本通から新通に移されました。

This was because of the big-scale river bank construction where the current of the Abe River was changed.

これは安倍川の流れを変える大規模な建設工事が行われたからでした。

The crossing point was also changed as a result.

その結果、安倍川の渡しの場所も変わりました。
