News that North Korea's Kim Jong-un sent a message of sympathy to Prime Minister Kishida over the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
A lot of things happen this year. When this person does something right, it becomes news.
A tsunami warning was also issued in North Korea due to the recent earthquake. The scale of this earthquake was quite large.
The maximum magnitude of this earthquake was 7.6.
All I knew about magnitude was that it was a logarithm, so I looked it up on Wikipedia.
The 1960 Chile earthquake had the highest magnitude of 9.5 among earthquakes that have occurred since the 20th century. This is approximately 1,000 times less powerful than the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
I don't remember learning the katakana word "magnitude" in school. This is the only explanation of magnitude in recent high school earth science textbook.
Moreover, as I wrote before, there are very few high schools that teach earth science.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency's website, there are multiple ways to measure magnitude, and there is no internationally unified standard. The Japan Meteorological Agency mainly uses two types. Do different countries announce different magnitude values for the same earthquake?
