龍安寺は枯山水のお庭で有名です。非常にシンプルな造で石と砂だけ。想像力と駆使して見てもらうためにシンプルに造られているんですね。枯山水庭園は禅の教えがもとになっていますが、禅にはシンプルに生きることの教えがたくさんあります。飾りや派手なものを捨てると想像力がかきたてられますね。枯山水庭園は瞑想に集中するために造られています。

Ryoanji temple is famous for its dry landscape garden. Dry landscape garden is based on Zen Buddhism. Zen teaches everything should be simple. We can see inside ourselves and improve our imagination if we maintain the simple life. Based on this way of thinking, the dry landscape garden is very simple. You will see only rocks and sand in the garden. In a way, this type of this garden can be called a meditation garden.

龍安寺のお庭でまずお話するのが15の岩です。数えてみると確かに15の岩がありますね。しかしどこに座っても15の岩を全てみることができないんです。最後のひとつは心の目をつかいなさい、という解釈がひとつあります。
15は満月の十五夜につながる完璧な数字なので、わざと完璧を避けたという説もあるそうです。

There are 15 rocks in the garden. However, it is so difficult to find all 15 rocks when you sit at any point. If you want, please try to find all the rocks. This garden tells you to think and use eyes inside yourself. Another explanation is that 15 is a number representing perfection because 15 can relate to the 15th night of the month, when the moon is full. So this was done to avoid perfection. Why is that? After the moon is full, it is going to be smaller. Traditional wisdom says perfection will be followed by destruction.

石の配置には色々なストーリーがあります。一番有名なのが「虎の子渡し」のお話ですね。岩を母虎と子虎にみたて、川を渡るというお話です。3匹の子虎のうち1匹が獰猛で子どもだけにしておくと食べてしまうかもしれないんですよ。でも母虎が渡すことができるのは1匹だけ。さて、全ての虎を川の向こう岸に渡すことができるでしょうか。

When you see dry landscape gardens, you can have another interpretation “A tiger carrying her cubs across the river”. Can you guess what represents the mother tiger and the cubs? The white sand represents the river and the rocks represent the tiger and her cubs. This is a sort of a riddle called “Tora-no-ko watashi”, meaning the tigers cross the river. There are a mother tiger and three cubs. One of the cubs is so fierce that he may eat his siblings unless the mother keeps an eye on them. How can she safely bring them all to the other side of the river? Please guess it.

他にも大海の島々、とか雲海に浮かぶ山、星座のカシオペアという説もあるようです。柴山かつよさんの「あなたも通訳ガイドです~英語で案内する京都」の著書で、石庭は物事を目で見る人には話しかけませんが、自分の心で物事を見ようとする人には話しかけてくれますよ」という一文について紹介されています。

Other explanations are “Islands in an ocean”, “Mountain peaks in a sea of clouds”, or “the constellation Cassiopeia”. There are various explanations, but I like this explanation best. It is that “the rock garden won’t speak to those who look at things with their eyes, but it will speak to those who look at things with their own hearts”.

そしてこの龍安寺の枯山水庭園もまた外国人の方が人気の火付け役になりました。1975年エリザベス女王がこの庭を絶賛され、日本でも知名度が上がり、禅のお庭の代表となっています。

In 1975, Queen Elizabeth came to Japan and visited Ryoanji. When she saw this dry landscape garden, she praised it highly. After that, Ryoanji temple became very famous and now here is one of the must-see spots in Kyoto.

方丈、高僧のお住まいに置かれたつくばいに文字が彫られています。この文字は「吾唯足知」（われただたるをしる）と読みます。これは「自らが足りるということを知るだけ」つまり今の自分に満足しているんですよ、という意味です。今のままでありがたい、という感謝の心、もうこれで十分、と求めない心を持つことを教えてくれているようです。

You will see the letters engraved on the stone basin at the Hojo. These four characters mean “I know only contentment”. That is, “I am content with what I am.” This philosophy tells me that I am grateful for what I have now. I don’t want anything anymore. That’ s why this rock garden is simple. It tells me that simple life is the best.
